wednesday1
A real headache is developing for Cameron not only are many councillors and members leaving the Cons for UKIP, the party treasurer says many wealthy donors to the Conservative party are now giving Ukip their money instead. Is it time for Cameron to finally stand up to the party which is threatening to steal the Cons clothes? http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/10/tory-donors-switching-ukip-treasurer

SevenRivers
He'd have to take a step to the right though, there's no such thing as left or right anymore for the Tories or Labour, they're all trying occupy the holy grail of the middle ground and be all things to all men, as some would say you can't get a cigarette paper between them. andygardener
UKIP need to succeed for him to have the strongest possible hand in terms of negotiating with Merkel and forcing the EU to change radically. If UKIP have a strong showing in the locals and more importantly the Europeans when it comes down to the negotiations it gives Cameron a huge advantage in terms of pushing for the absolute best deal for Britain in exchange for a Conservative "in" campaign in the referendum. If they don't come up with a suitable deal that is sellable to Britain, the Conservatives go into the next election with a referendum and campaign on "out". Mr Farage is doing the country a favour. El Cid
Anything that UKIP can do, the Tories can do better; whether that is on the in-out EU or tax. The Tories want to say that UKIP are a threat, because it down-plays the real potential threat, the Liberal Democrats.
Scabbydog
Quote from Labour Uncut. "The Electoral Commission has published its latest quarterly report on the donations to political parties. The first thing to note is that overall levels of donations to all political parties were down almost £1 million when compared to the first three months of the year. The Tories were down £250,000 receiving £3.8 million whilst Labour was down £450,000 receiving just under £3 million. So it’s clear that Labour, already receiving less than the Tories, appears to be feeling the squeeze even more. The detail of the figures goes on to show that that even more of party’s income is now derived from a single source: the trade unions. Of all of the donations received by Labour in this reporting period more than £2 million, or about 70%, came from the Trade Unions. And of this £2 million, Unite gave over £840,000 almost double that of the next biggest, USDAW, at £429,000."
El Cid
Should we be worried that the unions give so little to the Tories?
andygardener
Should we be worried that the unions give so little to the Tories? Not really. However the fact that the second party in our country is a wholly owned subsidiary of chippy unions might raise an eyebrow though.
El Cid
the fact that the second party in our country is a wholly owned subsidiary of chippy unions might raise an eyebrow though. The Tories have only the interests of big businesses at heart, so we need an alternative.
