Train travel and discrimination

Recommended Posts

Hi

Its is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age, in the provision of public services.

So why do pensioners get a free bus pass, and 16-25 year olds can get a travel card for £28 that allows them less than half price travel on trains; and under 16 get half fare.

Railways are a public service, they get subsidised by tax payers money.

Getting a free bus pass / travel card doesn't constitute discrimination.

Same as if I didn't have any money to travel on the train and did so I wouldn't have a case of discrimination.

Percieved unfairness doesn't always equal discrimination

If you treat two groups of people differently, that is discrimination. And that is what they are doing.

If they gave gays and lesbians a free bus pass, there would be an outcry.

It's not discrimination because every one of us has been a child and we will all become pensioners, so at some point we will be able to benefit.

It is still discrimination, I think that we have too many discrimination laws. But some seem to not to be enforced.

C'mon surely you can see the difference?

I can't afford to say at the Ritz, but I wouldn't claim that was discrimination. If I was unable to get to my room there because I was in a wheelchair; or they refused me staying there because I was too old, male, gay, the wrong ethnicity then it would be discrimination.

The Ritz is not a public service, so they might be allowed?

I don't think public service comes into it.

I might fancy a stay at a respite centre provided by the NHS. Because I've paid into the system doesn't entitle me to claim discrimination because I would be refused.

This thread is about age discrimination.

It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of: age

You’re protected from discrimination in these situations: when using public services
