It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of: age

You’re protected from discrimination in these situations: when using public services

Yes it is against the law to discriminate against anyone on the grounds of age.

I think that Pensioners get a free bus pass, under 16s get half fare because they are normally from groups that are economically disadvataged.

C'mon surely you can see the difference?

I can't afford to say at the Ritz, but I wouldn't claim that was discrimination. If I was unable to get to my room there because I was in a wheelchair; or they refused me staying there because I was too old, male, gay, the wrong ethnicity then it would be discrimination.

Your argument here though is based on affordability - not on age which is what the OP refers to.

El Cid, In your example I think it would only be discriminiation if some pensioners were allowed to travel free but others had to pay.

The free travel is termed as a consession.

El Cid is trying to argue that the free travel is discriminatory because it is attached to "age" as in this :

Age discrimination

Key points

It is unlawful because of age to:

discriminate directly against anyone - unless it can be objectively justified

discriminate indirectly against anyone - unless it can be objectively justified

subject someone to harassment related to age

victimise someone because of age

It is illegal to discriminate purely on the basis of age.

However it is not illegal to discriminate on the basis of ability to pay, and there is legal precedent that has established that it is okay to treat children and pensioners more favourably.

Society has also debated and decided that it is beneficial to give children and pensioners various benefits.

You may as well claim that providing a pension itself is age discrimination.

No, they need to have paid in a certain ammount of tax/NI; where as everyone over a certain age gets a bus pass, but not everyone gets a state pension.

And 25 year olds that get a discount card?
