Tories to get rid of prison perks

Recommended Posts

Someone on here suggested outsourcing prisons. Buy a load of prisons in Thailand and ship our prisoners over there.

We out source everything else so we may as well out source prisons, I don’t think many ex offender will be in a rush to go back to a Thai prison. I also think too many people are sent to prison, there are better ways of making them pay back to the community.

There should be a world mega prison where all countries send their lowest of the low.

Another reasonable idea.

You do know that all of this has been tried and failed?

Maybe there isn't an answer and some people just don't want to live life according to rules they had no say in making.

Its obviously not working if nearly half of inmates re-offend. therefore the punishment is not severe enough. Taking away their perks is a start to making prison a punishment and not a holiday camp.

All the evidence shows that harsh regimes do not decrease reoffending rates.

What the evidence does show is that having a job, strong family relationships and being taught thinking and life skills do reduce reofffending.

Go figure.

Good idea but how would the Tories run the country from there, how's about going down the road of Demolition Man and freezing all the prisoners, and reprogramming them.

You know so they come out and can talk, read & possibly hold a conversation.

We've been far too soft on them for long enough, bread & water & beaten thrice weekly, it's not punishment nowadays that's why so many keep going back in for the easy life.

Holding tanks ready for the firing squad.

That's quite obviously nonsensical since the last execution there was in 2009 and the last year I could find figures for (2003) shows a prison population of 211,475.

See post no. 34.

Treating prisoners like animals will not stop them reoffending.

Giving them skills, literacy, a sense of self worth, improving their thinking skills and helping them find employment tends to help a great deal more.

It sounds like you are coming up with a solution without analysing the problem. For society to benefit, we need to understand why inmates re-offend and address that problem. Punishment shouldn't come in to it unless that is a useful deterrent. As others have said, education, support groups and programs to reintroduce offenders into society are also highly important, probably more so than punishment.

But it's okay for them to rob and murder and fiddle with kids, they should get jack apart from good old fashioned hard labour. Briefly saw a clip on TV last night that a burglar had escaped down some sort of pipe, and was thought to be dead INSTANT JUSTICE.

Oh we must look after our prison population, cobblers; they've done wrong make it as hard for them as possible
