Parvo
Abusers can be persecuted if they abuse someone no matter what age they are, an age of consent doesn’t stop abuse and lowering it wouldn’t stop abusers from being prosecuted. ---------- Post added 09-05-2013 at 18:47 ---------- I wonder if the recent 'grooming abuse' cases would have got to court if the age of consent had been 13.... (or would the poor kids have just got charged with prostitution) so I thing there are cases where abusive men would NOT be charged if the age of consent was lowered... Are you saying that if someone abuses a 16 year old it isn't abuse because they are over the age of concent.
Vague_Boy
This was put forward as far as I can see to protect dirty old men, nothing more. In Spain the age of consent is.... 13. In Turkey it's 18. Is one "right" and one "wrong"?

WeX
An open letter to Barbara Hewson from a survivor http://stavvers.wordpress.com/2013/05/09/an-open-letter-to-barbara-hewson-from-a-survivor/ Content note: this piece discusses sexual abuse and the psychological impact of sexual abuse. I take exeption to this. Your words are emotive for no reason. No one has ever died of sexual abuse, so to say this woman is a survivor is OTT. Then there is the assertion that the age of consent and child rape are somehow connected. Is the rape of a child any more or less damaging than the rape of a person who is over the age of consent? If a girl is raped one day before her 16th birthday does that one day make it more damaging? Come on lets not let this run away with us. Rape is rape, and the age of consent has very little to do with it. 16 is a child and so abuse is no different to that of a younger child. I personally think consent should be at 18 or it it must stay at 16 the other party must be within a specific age range too. +2 or 3 or 4 years max for example. Yes auto-correct software changes the words I want on a regular basis and being dyslexic I don't notice the difference.

Yes, she killed herself. Would she have done it in the abscence of the abuse? No. What killed her? The abuse.

People who have been sexually abused sometimes refer to themselves as survivors. Indeed there are many support groups that are for survivors of sexual abuse and named as such. People do die from abuse, the psychological impact can be traumatic. Suicides, self harm, depression, anxiety even dissociative personality disorders are the consequnece of abuse. Whether you take exception to the emotive language used is neither here nor there.
