cartav
Seems to have been going forever this topic! .......... and a lot of it's not pure Sheff I think, summat that's UK wide maybe. What about DATAL ? Going back that one when the cutlery trade might employ piece workers ( paid for what they could produce individually) or datal lads (who had a daily wage}. Anyone said to be DATAL outside of work was a bit slow, maybe bordering on being thick........ tha knows, not fat but dim. And SPICE....... Like in " 'As tha gorrenny spice ?" . Sweets, etc. , that is. LOTION or POP........Beer etc. Like in "We supped some stuff last neet !" PIKING........... To peep, observing without being seen. Peeping Toms were "Pikers". STARVED....... .. As in "Starved through", not hungry but cold. COIL OIL......... Coal hole, that is. the ubiquitous cellar in the older terrace house or the access hole in the footpath down which coal bags were emptied. CELLAR 'EAD.... The landing or top step of the stair into the cellar from the kitchen. SILING DOWN..... Normal summer weather in Sheff......... Heavy rain. ........................................................................................................................ And Please Please Plain Talker ! You come up with some intelligent comment at times, but the commercials do you no favours.... So shut thi gob, luv !
