Sheffieldish - words & phrases

I used the phrase "a bit of a puther" the other day, and no one had heard it before here in Devon. I meant a lot of dust. Is it a Sheffield word? I remember"poppo" meaning a horse.

Was the deep pinky red smelly soap you're all thinking about ''Lifebuoy''?

 

There were two 'brown soaps' : 'Wright's Coal Tar' and 'Pears'

Definitely not, Lifebuoy was what the posh people had and maybe came on the scene much later than the pink/red carbolic soap.:gag:

 

'Lifebuoy' soap was around in the early '50s even to my knowledge.

'Lifebuoy' soap was around in the early '50s even to my knowledge.

 

It was around much later than that, The TV ads used to have folks whispering BO in other people's lugholes :D
