Why do Politicians want us to remain in the EU?

Recommended Posts

Both senior Coalition and Labour politicians are divided and want us to remain in the EU, why?

It can't be because they are looking forward to a nice commission in the EU once their career in Parliament is up. This subject seems to be the one issue that divides a party internally more than any other.

We do most of our trade with the EU.

If we leave it will negatively effect trade, probably push us into another recession.

At least we can blame the government tho right?

What makes you think the EU will stop trading with us?

Odd that such a simplistic answer divides politicians of the big three parties.

Obama is against the UK leaving the EU as well.

Could it be that politicians wouldn't be able to blame all their own failings on the EU if we came out?

They won't 'stop' but with us being outside there's a stack of trade agreements, treaties, laws and other stuff we won't be able to use anymore.

It will make us less competitive and attractive to trade with.

In essence being in the EU means we have free access to trade with a bunch of nations that are broke. The UK also imports more than it exports to the EU.

Also, if an apple for example cost a buyer 1p from the EU but after we leave would cost 2p, we would just import from other countries instead. Also more and more of our exports go to none EU nations now, so the freedom to sell to people who don't have the money to buy our goods is pretty worthless.

Plus you can be in the EU trading block and not be part the EU like Norway.

Would it make us more attractive to countries outside the EU? (the EU is going bust isn't it?).. the BRIC ones? Genuine question.. but I suppose it all depends on the deal we do to leave (if we do of course)

The trouble is that its such a polarised topic, and one which usually comes out at 50% for and 50% against. Here are some positives:

But its just as easy to get the negatives.

My personal view of staying in the EU is for the environmental legislations the UK is forced to adhere to. Before this we had terrible pollution issues in our rivers and seas. And quite recently this bee pesticide issue.
