Britain had already abolished slavery in the empire & stopped the international slave trade, so there was a lot of anti-slavery talk going on in all parts of England at that time. Some of the cotton came from Egypt & India who had to compete with slave labour produced cotton from America, it was a big issue for Britain & the Empire at the time.

So you admit that Britain was actively still buying cotton from the South, despite having to run through a boycott made by the USN. So much for your stated anti slavery.To this day Southerners still maintain it was not a civil war about slavery but a war between states due to economics. Check those facts.

Just don't understand the evasion. It's history - it happened. The South were fighting for slavery. There were other factors involved - economics, the power that each state should retain - but slavery isn't to be ignored.

The South used cotton as a political pawn and as an economic currency, and it backfired on them. They thought King Cotton would save them. They issued bonds for future cotton and sent themselves bankrupt printing money to keep afloat.

They were fighting for a state to have the right to conduct its affairs in the best way it considered to flourish. The need to feed the cotton mills of Manchester had as much to do with slavery as the plantation owners of the South. I don't think there was much anti slavery talk going on in Lancashire at the time. The Northern States had all the raw materials they needed to thrive, but precious little cotton.

The start of the civil war was caused by the secession of South Carolina from the Union and the firing on the Federal Armoury at Fort Sumter by the South Carolina militia.

When several other southern States followed suit and seceded Lincoln went to war to preserve the Union. The issue of slavery was one that was seriously dividing north and south but it was to restore and preserve the Union and not slavery that led to the start of hostilities. It wasnt until near the end of the civil war in 1865 that the Union Congress passed a bill to abolish slavery but at that time America was split into two nations with Jefferson Davis still President of the Confederated States of America.

It's easy to condemn the mentality and opinions of people who lived nearly two centuries ago. It's a bad habit to pass judgement from the point of view of an enlighted 21st century mind.

While there many who saw it as completely wrong for one person to own another person many more in the southern states merely saw it as owning just another piece of property.

Abe Lincoln himself for all his good qualities regarded people of colour as inferior. After he had succesfully passed the bill through Congress abolishing slavery he had little interest in what happened to the freed slaves after that.

If anyone had suggested a Civil Rights bill of some sort granting a black person equal rights with a white person it would have never had a chance of even being debated in Congress

 

Even in the northern States a person of color had to "know his or her place" in that society and in Europe a black immigrant from Africa would have had a very difficult time in being accepted as a person of equal status even if he or she had been a person of education.

 

I'm old enough to remember the post war years when the first immigrants from the West Indies started to arrive in Britain. They invariably took up residence in the poorer areas of the big cities and it was common enough to see "Sorry no black" posted outside flats and bed sitters

 

People back then were just what they were... simple as that
