I agree with Lancs_Lad, Dexel Tyres on Staniforth Road are the best in my opinion.

I was recommended them years from a Taxi Driver. He said they all use Dexel, so if it's right for them with the amount of curbs them mount all day long, they must be good.

A slight change from Lancs_Lad post though, they now offer a full computerised 4 wheel alignment rather than just basic tracking.

It's not a Hunter machine as some of you have mentioned, but Corghi, which after some research seems to be Ferrari's recommended equipment, so I guess it's good stuff.

I've used Hawley's at Hillsborough, who were great.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Hawley's. My experience of them is not so good.

So I bought 4 new tyres online (from Black Circles or one of these tyre websites - it's the cheapest way of doing it usually). You select where you want to have the tyres delivered to for fitting. Hawleys was one of the places on the list so I had them delivered to Hawleys on Sharrow Vale Road. According to the website they would be delivered on a certain day of the week. That was the first problem - I kept phoning Hawley's but they claim not to have received them - even though the website notification was showing as delivered.

Eventually, seeing as I was getting nowhere trying to phone them, I went in, in person and took the order notification - and then magically, they found that they DID have them after all. So, then I arranged to have them fitted and have the 4 wheel alignment done.

(If you drive a 4x4 you'll know that there's no point putting new tyres on it if you don't have a wheel alignment because the sheer weight of these vehicles will scrub the tread off in no time if it's out of line).

They fitted the tyres but then told me they don't do 4x4 wheel alignment at Sharrow Vale Road - you have to go to Hillsboro for it. AND you need to phone up and book in for an appointment - you can't just go on spec. w

So I made an appointment to have the tracking done at Hawley's Hillsboro.

You've got to drive through a narrow alleyway to get in to their place, which was a bit of a challenge in a 4x4 - anyhow...

I'd booked in for 10.30. I said to the guy - "how long will it be roughly?" he said, "I can't possibly tell you". So I said to him, "well, I'm just wondering whether I should stay here and wait or go off somewhere and come back?". So, he said, "it'll be at least an hour - maybe an hour and a half". So I went off to explore the delights of Hillsboro shopping area! :gag:

I went back an hour and a half later - and it was done - but I had to wait about another 15 minutes before the bloke could do the paperwork and charge me.

To be honest, I'd never go there again. Service was painfully slow - not very customer focused - and I can't think of a worse place than Hillsboro - to try and find something to do for 1.5 hours there.

There's a place on the main GT Road, Mirpur, Pakistan.

His tool kit seems to consist of a piece of string and a 14lb lump hammer.

Once "measured" he wacks the offending wheel so hard, the door on the opposite side nearly falls off.

He guarantees his work for life, your car will never need tracking again or he will do it for free.

As far as I am aware, nobody has ever returned, so he must have fixed them good.

Some truth in that

In a short employment as a apprentice motor mechanic in 1947 the mechanic I was with use a piece of metal tube with piece of smaller diameter tube inside so that it was able to slide in and out and locked into place with a winged locking screw.

The method then was using this tube to get the distance at the furthest front point of the of the rim on the front wheels and check it against the furthest point back on the rims .

A quarter of an inch toe in (if I remember properly) all was well, if not he adjusted the track rod that was threaded to allow adjustment to the proper toe in needed.
