mike208
Yes, it's Memorial Day. I'm in the US at the moment and they are going mad for it. Memorial Day specials on TV, radio and special offers in bars and restaurants etc.

alternageek
The schools break up this week for their Summer break . Not all schools. Most of the northeast will finish at the end of June. Southern states tend to finish in early May to the end of the month. ---------- Post added 24-05-2013 at 10:22 ---------- do not Americans get any of the Easter days, as bank holidays? Our national holidays are as follows: New Years Day - 1 Jan MLK (though not all observe, most use it as a floating day, to use for Jewish Holidays or Easter, etc) - 3rd Monday in Jan Memorial Day - Last monday in May Independence Day - 4th of July Labor Day - 1st monday in September Thanksgiving - usually the last Thursday in November Christmas Day We then have Federal Holidays, where government offices, post office and public schools are closed. These days include: Inauguration Day (once every 4 years) Presidents Day (3rd monday in February and brings together Lincoln and Washingtons Birthdays - as they used to be celebrated separately, but were merged) Columbus Day - October Veterans Day - November Election Day - November (every four years) Federal Holidays are not observed in the private sector and there is no additional pay for working on those days
adamf
Memorial Day in the United States is same day this year as the UK Spring Bank Holiday. Next Monday, the 27th. Americans need a holiday around now, more than the UK does. They do have a May Day like the holiday UK people got a few weeks ago, but it doesn't happen in May. It happens in September, and is called Labor Day. You're allowed to wear white shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day (which is also when all the outdoor pools close). buck
They should spread them out then thanksgiving, Christmas, mlk day now Memorial Day.We have one day off for Christmas, one for new years, not a week. We also have one off for Easter, not good Friday. One for MLK, one for July 4th, one for labor day, one for thanksgiving and that's it. Some people get a day of for president's day but not for many in private service. ---------- Post added 28-05-2013 at 11:53 ---------- No they do not have holidays at EasterYes we do, only Easter Monday, not Good Friday. ---------- Post added 28-05-2013 at 11:57 ---------- Americans seem to have a lot more holiday days than we do.Correct me if I'm wrong. Don't you have the week off between Christmas and New Year?. Don't you have Good Friday and Easter Monday too. Is there time off for Whitsun, Bank Holiday. Jeffrey Shaw
1. No, the UK is not [officially] closed from 25 December to 1 January inclusive; it just feels that way. 2. Good Friday is a Bank Holiday- except that, in Sheffield's steelworks days, it wasn't (and Easter Tuesday was its effective replacement, but only here). 3. Easter Monday: yes. 4. Whit: no. It was effectively replaced by the final Monday in May- much too close to Easter, often, and to the first Monday in May (adopted in the 1970s as a sop to the [communist] May Day nonsense). 5. Oh, and there's also the final Monday in August. All of that is true for England/Wales. Scotland is a bit different; and Northern Ireland even more so. Harleyman
so most of the holidays are themed over presidents and the forces? whereas ours are mostly "bank" holidays is have thought easter would be a big Christian holiday in the US tho Oo Many refer to Easter as Spring Break when schools and colleges get a week off. Because of separation of Church and State there is no holiday officially recognized as a "religious holiday" As for Christmas the traditional greeting seems to have become "Happy Holidays" as the Jewish holiday Hanukah is around the same time and now something called Qaanza or Kwanza which is some kind of holiday associated with Africa is celebrated also at the same time as Christmas and Hanukah Memorial Day which was yesterday is a major holiday and in observance of American servicemen and women killed in all wars
