Sheffield Walking Group 20s & 30s - Join our Sunday walk

Recommended Posts

Sunday 26th May A2 (7 miles)

Wortley & Wharncliffe Heath Nature Reserve

This walk follows a number of well defined footpaths including the Trans Pennine Trail, the Barnsley Boundary Walk and the Elsecar to Wortley Trail. This is a moderate walk and suitable for walkers with some experience in distance. There are a couple of hills and the paths can be very muddy after long periods of rain, especially in the woods and the farmer’s fields. Proper walking shoes and clothes are recommended.

We start the walk from St Leonard’s, the present church built in the middle of the 18th century. We head towards Finkle Street before turning onto the Trans Pennine Trail. We head towards the Wharncliffe Heath Nature Reserve where there will be time for a coffee break or lunch stop depending on how hungry people are. We will then leave the woods at Woodhead Road. Here there will be some road walking and care needs to be taken at all times.

We then join the Barnsley Boundary Walk near Cundy Houses. These were originally a number of cottages said to be built in the seventeenth century. They are named after Edmund Cundy, Curate at Wortley from 1592 to 1629. You will be able to see the base of an ancient cross, known as the Cundy Cross before reaching a number of fields. We walk along the Barnsley Boundary Walk, past Booth Wood, Low Booth Wood, West Side, and Howbrook Reservoir, which is known locally as Howbrook Dam. Here you can buy a permit for fishing for £4.00 a day. We then walk through the village of Howbrook, where the locals have wonderful maintained gardens and head towards Carr Head Farm, which has now been converted into posh housing, until we reach Storrs Dike.

There will be a little bit of road walking on Westwood Lane. We then head back to Wortley on the Elsecar to Wortley Trail, walking past two lodges Westwood Lodge (dated circa 1700) and the Park House built in the early eighteenth century. Here you will see some great views of Wortley Hall.

Time permitting there will be an opportunity to have a well earned drink in the Wortley Arms Hotel, Wortley Village. The present building dates from the 18th Century. This will depend on the bus times back to Sheffield since they only run every two hours.

Start: SK994308, Outside the main entrance of St Leonard’s, Wortley,

Transport: Meet at 11:15 at the walk start. The 29 bus from Sheffield Interchange leaves 10.30 am. Please note that the walk leader will catch the bus from Longley Sixth Form College at 10.44 am.

New members are welcome! To book, just text the walk leader the day before saying you are coming.
