we dont really have much money to spend and amazon IS about the cheapest, so its a vicious circle :(

They would probably be dearer if they paid more tax. Have you wondered why they are cheapest?

i never said they wouldnt :suspect:

i said, with the spending capabillity of most of the general public diminishing, its a vicious circle cos we can barely afford to pay more

its like local shops, people would rather buy from local shops as its morally better, however, they are generally a lot dearer than supermarkets or the internet, and in the long run they close, another vicious circle

Well in that case you have no reason to moan about businesses that don't pay the full whack of tax here. Because those businesses have the ability to sell goods cheaper and you are happy to buy them. It is because folk are happy to buy cheap imports that our manufacturing has declined. You can't pay folk high wages to make goods here if the customers are buying cheap imports. The irony is that it is the customers buying the cheap imports who are putting themselves out of a job.

Lateral thinking. If the UK halved the rate of corporation tax all these businesses would pay their taxes in the UK instead of Ireland and we wouldn't be in the situation at all.

But then Ireland would halve its corporation tax to compete, ergo a race to the bottom. Eventually the corporations would pay no tax. citizens would end up paying all the tax including tax that supported the infrastructure the corporations need to operate. As the OP said the game has changed.

Totally agree with that last bit - shut the loop holes too. I think holland do something similar, which is why one of bono's companies are based there.

I gleaned an interesting factoid from the fallout of apples grilling in the US (you know the one - where it came it light they have $150bn offshore that they've paid nothing on) that in the 50s 32% of American tax income came from company profits, now it's down to about 8%. I'll try and find the link.

Found it, it was peston. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22607349

Would it be a problem if companies that pay no tax now paid no tax somewhere else. It is clear that folks are prepared to buy from the cheapest source so company profits would be squeezed anyhow. Folk paying more tax through income tax & VAT would solve the tax black hole. Companies have to pay a wage to folk so that they can pay the tax on their income. Where's the problem.

Yes it would be a problem because the other countries where corporations pay no tax would be our export markets. And the amount a company would have to pay to workers so that workers could meet their tax obligations would be so high no company would pay it. They would just move work to cheaper locations.

the gov needs to stop trading with countries whos work ethic is not on a level playing field with this country. we are hit with green taxes which companies in this country have to adhere to or be fined etc. yet trade with countries that have not the same rules :suspect:.
