Malt Houses on Wordsworth Avenue

I grew up in one of the reinforced pre-cast concrete block houses on Wordsworth Avenue between Remington and Monteney.

I can not remember ever hearing them referred to as the Malt Houses at the time, however I have seen the term used on this forum.

Does anyone know where it comes from?

Probably brewing.

 

Nowadays these houses would be know as 'leaf houses' or bud houses. for the entrepreneurial spirit in Sheffield remains strong!

I see the nearby pub which was the Fighting **** in my day is now called the Malthouse

In 1950/51 I was in the first intake into Monteney Junior School and the last of these houses ,near the school, were being erected by a company called Malthouse. Hence the name.

Incidentally 1951 was the year I was born (I was actually an immigrant from Shirecliffe) and went to Monteney Infants in '56 or '57

There was a building firm called Malthouses located on Cliffe Field Road in the Meersbrook area of Sheffield. This was in the 1950s.
