psynuk
If there is no English culture how could you have been brought up in"about as English a town as you could ask for" how would you know it was? Thats a good point and I'm not sure I can answer it very well. I suppose that I mean that the English culture is a mish mash of a lot of influences. Its not very easy to say this is english and that isn't when the population and its customs are drawn from so many other cultures. If you look in the slightest at our history you've got influences from; the celts, the romans, the anglo saxons, the vikings, the normans, and they're all quite modern ancestors in the wider scheme of things and they are also drawn from wider areas of the world. The language and laws we have here are part of what makes these Islands so good, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_history_of_the_British_Isles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_English_land_law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_English_criminal_law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_English_contract_law Which are again a mish mash of other laws and languages from 'foreign' lands. same for religion. When something like the EDL/robinson pops up to say you must respect our laws and our cultures but I'm not going to myself, it makes me cringe. 'Our culture' is ever changing and people who immigrate here often add to it for the better, over time we'll assimilate other parts of other cultures for the EDL to try and detirmine what those parts will be is somewhat laughable. Chris_Sleeps
Tommy Robinson has basic control of what he says and avoids anything outright racist or silly. Happily retracted.

And if there is no such thing as English or British culture, that means we don't have anything that marks us out as different. If we're not different, who are we the same as? The French? Germans? Dutch? Spanish? Chinese? Americans? Danish? Every single country in the world has it's own unique culture. People who claim the UK to be some black hole void of culture must go around with their eyes closed and wear ear plugs all day.
