El Cid
Hi In 1992, the proportion of people in the UK who got cancer during their life was 32%. This increased to 44% in 2010, an increase of more than a third. And the numbers of people getting cancer is still rising. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22796220 Common environmental factors that contribute to cancer death include tobacco, alcohol, diet and obesity, infections, radiation, stress, lack of physical activity, and environmental pollutants. Our lifestyles are killing us, why is very little being done about it?

El Cid
Our lifestyles are killing us: why are WE, as individuals with responsibility for ourselves, not doing anything about it? There are things that can be done. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/jun/05/advice-pregnant-women-chemicals-confusing Certain professions have a higher chance of getting cancer because of the cemicals that they are exposed to. schoolrdgal
Life's a lottery. A friend has terminal cancer, she was given 6 months 2 yrs ago. She is also a lot younger than me. I consider myself fairly fit, that doesn't mean I won't become ill tomorrow or have an accident .

WeX
Have you thought that cancer is part of us all? Its a mutation like all evolution and when it doesn't work, it kills off the host. The longer you live the more likely you will get cancer and so the numbers are rising? Most people died between 70-78 in 1994, in 2010 its 74-83. Which is an approx 7% increase in time lived. Given that for each year you live your chances of getting cancer are increased, that would put the numbers now suffering from cancer about right. But what you haven't mentioned is the rise in the survival rates of cancer sufferers which has risen greatly over the time period.
poppet2
What is interesting is estrogen, as a result of the pill, in our recycled water system, which has resulted in an increase in prostate and breast cancer. I wonder if the figures are lower in countries where there is no oral contraception and recycled water systems? http://www.livescience.com/17028-prostate-cancer-risk-birth-control.html
