Help/advice electric light switches

Recommended Posts

The bedroom switch will be ok, if there's only two wires you can't go wrong. The two switches in the living room will be the cause of the problems including the stairs. Don't listen to comment about wire colours and blowing things up as all the wires in your switches will be live (should be no neutral in there, especially if all the wires were wired into the switches. First you'll need to establish which wire is the permanent live and work from there. Also do both switches in the living room control the same lights (two way circuit) or separate lights (one way circuits). My guess is its a two way circuit and the switch with four wires (the first switch) will have the permanent live in plus the permanent live feed back out to the stairs circuit and two wires that link to the second switch. The second switch will then have the two wires from first switch and the feed to the light/s.

Next time you decide to go swapping switches or sockets, make sure you identify what all the wires do before you disconnect anything.

and the next time you read a post and decide to comment dont bother us with useless comments

If you'd followed that advice before you started playing sparky then you shouldn't have had any problems replacing the switch. If you consider that useless advice then good luck!

As for telling you to get an electrician in after you'd messed up, well forgive me for not wanting to be responsible for a Star headline of "DIYer electrocuted after following internet forummer advice". If you don't know the basics of identify, label and check when working with mains electricity, then you shouldn't be allowed near a screwdriver. It's thanks to the likes of you that we had to have Part P introduced.

Although all the wires will be live, depending on the age of the installation, the wire colours will tell you what to connect to where. The permanent live and switch live have designated colours in the regs. Hence 3 core cable has different coloured cores (brown, black & grey).

Glad you got it sorted OP.
