Sony
Come on peeps, first thing in the morning this should wake you up! About 6.5 billion people on this earth. 155000 people die every day. Which is roughly 57 million people a year. I know its morbid, but my essay is based on this:P
Old_Bloke
In the UK, 1 billion is 1 million million (1,000,000,000,000). In the US, 1 billion is 1 thousand million (1,000,000,000)
Alex C.
in Europe 1.000.000.000.000 (in USA trillion) -in USA 1.000.000.000 (in Europe miliard) From here So assuming its a UK essay, there are one million millions in a billion.
Sony
umm....thanks for that! Just wonder why it's different in the US?? Surely it should be the same everywhere!
Old_Bloke
Just to make things more complicated, isn't everyone standardising on the American version now?
Sony
Umm.. So how many people die every 10 years?
waldershelf
Just to make things more complicated, isn't everyone standardising on the American version now? Historically a British Billion was a million million, it is now almost universally accepted that a thousand million is a billion.
Fareast
I think for the past 20 or 30 years a billion has meant a thousand million in all the statistics they dish out about various things , in the U.K. and the U.S. About 50 years ago there was a difference between our billion and the American billion--------one of them did mean a million millions-------but I've forgotton now which way round it was .! Alex C.
If it was a million million, you'd be talking about one sixth of the population dying every year... I don't think we're anywhere close to those rates of death...
Greybeard
When Gordon Brown talks of billions of pounds I assume he's thinking of thousands of millions, - well I hope he is In which case the Treasury use the US model of a billion. OTOH geologists suggest the age of the earth at 4 billion years - four thousand million yet I think astronomers stick to the million x million for spatial distances of a billion.
