my first link, you need to drag the text left to see it, i know, it doesnt explain that lol

Interesting bit about Sam Garvin, jumping on a tram then slashing the first bloke he saw so he'd get an alibi and he got 18 months and not the murder charge.

I’ve dragged it further left than Corbyn and still can’t find anything. My grandfather told me that Garvin thumped a policeman and then let him arrest him, slashing someone wouldn’t guarantee him being arrested, I can see the sense of that.

My late father born 1916 in Sheffield often talked of the notorious Mooney gangs.  I later read Mr Bean's excellent book and latterly saw  a tv documentary. I believe that the Police Officer from Scotland stipulated a minimum of a 46 inch chest for officers recruited to his squad. These officers were not averse to throwing wrongdoers through pub doors. Later I read the biography of Orde Wingate (Officer in the 'Chindits').  He spent some of his pre-war army  career billeted in Sheffield. There is reference in the book to two rival gangs known as the Tykes and the White Boys. I assume they were not connected to the gangs previously mentioned here

would be delighted to be educated otherwise.

My nan (101 next month) was born in 1919 and always told us about her uncles who were the 'Edward Brothers' and she had seen someone get their throat cut when she was young. So they must have been around 1900.

Her dad had a small shop too, he used to money lend too from the sound of it but it all ended when someone threw an axe through the window. She went to the school at the top of Prince of Wales road so guessing it was around there but lived up Pitsmore all the time I've known.

Always told us about her mum who was always boxing/fighting.

I'm guessing back in those days each street probably had its own trouble, but the thing about a throat being cut always stood out as something out of the ordinary
