He may well quite have denied it though, or not even known for certain. There's no reason to be ashamed of it unless for a personal reason. I wouldn't think less of him for that. I knew about his mother having been in an asylum, in fact one thing I admire about him was that he took her out of the Mental Hospital where she was when he became famous and took care of her in the USA where she remained till her death.
