The summer of 1976

Recommended Posts

The recent spell of nice weather brought back memories of the great summer of 76,after a poor spring the weather changed and we had about two months of well above normal temperatures.

The result of a high pressure zone that parked up over the British isles and was held in place by atmospheric conditions,we sweltered at work and the novelty soon wore off, in the end we were all glad when it started raining.

Apart from 2006 cant remember a summer any thing like it.

1959. I was on a School trip to London and one of the teachers broke an egg on the pavement and we watched it cook.

I remember 1976 well. - I wasn't glad when the rains came, though. 76 was a good summer, but some places have summers like that most years.

1995 saw a drought in Yorkshire with some reservoirs running dry. Temperatures were up to 20C in early May and stayed that way for months. Mark Thomas did a ****-take on telly about Ethiopia donating water to us.

When the temperatures drop below 20, most places turn the heating on. :hihi:

And no doubt, they sent somebody over to deliver each pint of water personally. :hihi:

In the summer of 76 we spent 2 weeks in Austria on a mountain walking holiday, it rained heavily almost every day and on one day it snowed. It was the days before Gore Tex and my Ventile jacket failed to cope with the Conditions. My then girlfriend, now Mrs BB, enjoyed the long full hot baths in the hotel after the walks, there was no water restrictions there. The summer snow impressed us so much we spent many winter holidays in the area skiing.
