Old Tom
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2013/jul/04/uk-new-car-sales-finance-deals UK new car sales up 13% in 16th consecutive month of growth Finance deals and strong demand for private cars boost half-year registrations above the 1 million mark Sales of new cars increased by more than 13% in June to just under 215,000, the 16th consecutive month of growth, new figures show. The rise was boosted by sales of private cars, which were up by more than 20% last month compared with June last year, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said. New car registrations for the year passed the 1 million mark in June, increasing by 10% compared with the same period in 2012 to 1,163,623. Motorists switching to more fuel-efficient cars helped reduce average new car C02 emissions by 3.7% on a year ago. The SMMT's interim chief executive, Mike Baunton, said: "Boosted by consistently strong private demand and further growth in June, half-year new car registrations have topped the 1 million mark. "June secured the 16th month of consecutive growth Another clear sign that the UK economy is back on track.
Rupert_Baehr
From the article: "The Ford Fiesta was the bestselling car last month at 11,332, followed by the Ford Focus (9,128), the Vauxhall Corsa (8,868), Vauxhall Astra (7,074), VW Golf (5,875), BMW 3 Series (5,432), VW Polo (4,703), BMW 1 Series (4,678), Nissan Qashqai (4,507) and Peugeot 208 (3,649)." Ford Fiesta - made in Cologne Ford Focus - made in Vauxhall Corsa - made in Eisenach or Zaragoza Vauxhall Astra - made in Luton (hooray! - a popular car actually made in the UK!) VW Golf - made in Wolfsburg BMW 3 series - made in Munich BMW 1 series - made in Leipzig or Regensburg Nissan Cashcow - made in Sunderland Peugeot 208 - made in France It's good that people have a bit more money to spend. What a pity there's such a poor choice of locally-made cars to spend it on.

What a pity there's such a poor choice of locally-made cars to spend it on. It is very odd that Britons buy so many imported cars when their fellow workers make so many here and they are so popular in export markets. Perhaps UK residents still remember the constant strikes and crap like Marinas and Allegros turned out by UK manufacturers in the past. BUT>> The UK is manufacturing and exporting record numbers of cars too. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/uk-car-production-eight-cent UK car production up by eight per cent UK car industry boosts economic recovery, while export figures break all-time records Production of vehicles in the UK rose by eight per cent in 2012, according to data released by the The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). As well as revealing the general healthy state of Britain’s car industry, the figures also show that car export volumes in 2012 broke all-time records. The industry also spent more on development, with research and development expenditure increasing by nine per cent to £1.7bn. Boosted by this growth, manufacturing jobs rose by two per cent in the automotive sector, to 146,000. Despite the increases in output and employment, manufacturing emissions fell by three per cent, while the amount of waste sent to landfill was down eight per cent per vehicle produced. The UK is bucking the overall EU trend of poor sales, confirmed by news last week that sales across the EU have hit a 20-year low. So far in 2013 the UK has seen year-on-year growth of 9.3 per cent. SMMT's interim chief executive, Mike Baunton said, "UK automotive continues to support the country's economic recovery, with rising turnover, increased manufacturing output and record export volumes providing further proof of industry's ability to compete on a global scale." SNES
For someone to lease a car for 3 years someone has had to buy it to lease to them. True, but it would be nice if people were really affording to buy their cars instead of renting them! Mind you then it creates a healthy market for used cars! Instead of people keeping their car for 10 years and getting rid when it's a banger, there's lots of 3-4 year old cars second hand!

Lease purchase offers an option that is often cheaper than an outright purchase and gives the flexibility of a fixed price sale should the car turn out to be a dog. My last 2 cars were bought ex lease purchase companies at only 1 year old. It is a good way of buying a car because you usually have a choice of 10/20 in the colour and spec you want. El Cid
I wonder how many people are actually buying the car and how many are just leasing for 3 years! Although the figures show an increase, sales are still way below the numbers sold in 2007. 2007/8 = 2,375,000 2012/13 = 2,170,
