Totley - Cross Scythes Pub

Recommended Posts

Can anyone settle this ?

I am certain that in the mid to late eighties, The Cross Scythes, Totley, was renamed The Roast Inn for a short period of time.

A friend of mine from Dore confirmed this, but does anyone else know if this is definitely the case ?

The Fleur de Lys, almost opposite, is currently boarded up and advertising for a new tenant. Curiously they may indirectly support the memory if you look closely at the following; http://www.enterpriseinns.com/PropertyReports/89089e57-debf-dd11-834d-005056b009d5_ReportPDF.pdf

It will be a brave person who takes the Fleur on, especially with so much local competition.

So you don't know, then ...

That link lists competitors, including Cross Scythes Roast Inn. It may have been about the time it was all refurbished and the bus terminus layby closed. It triggers memories of changed signage, but Cross Scythes may just have been less prominent than Roast Inn for quite a short period.

In the Totley Independent dated March 1991, on p.7 is a short note to say the Cross Scythes is no longer a "Roast Inn" and is to become a fun pub.

"Roast Inn" sounds like a brand, like "Wetherspoons".

[on edit]. "Roast Inn" was originally a Whitbread brand, ending up after a merry go round of buying and selling with Punch Taverns.

When did the Cross Scythes go independent? I know its current incarnation dates to 2009.
