Crank Shaft replacement

Recommended Posts

You can say the same for oil pressure, by the time the oil pressure light comes on in most cars it's already too late and you'd done damage.

Mind you now people think nothing of replacing a ten year old car, at 10 years old it's basicly a shed anyway

I always reckoned that the oil pressure lamp should be called the "Engine is now f****** lamp"

thankfully mine has both a low level warning lamp, and a below expected pressure lamp, as well as the aforementioned engine is screwed light.

Thanks for the responses.

Had it checked out by an engine specialist today. He believes its the piston that's on its way out and that's what is causing the strange sound.

He passed me a number for some guy who works at Vauxhall who has quoted £800 to £1k to fix it.

Does this seem a reasonable price, or do you think it could be cheaper elsewhere?

The damn van is only worth about £2.5k!!

If it's just a scuffed piston then it's a reasonable price, although there could be other damage as well. If you do go ahead and have it done, and they have to remove the crank to do it (not sure if that's required) then make sure you get all the big ends and main shells swapped as well - it;ll cost a little more but it'll be worth it to stop them going in a few months time.

2 Diff mechanics have both said it may be cheaper to get a new engine rather than replacing parts.

But been quoted approx £600-£1000 for parts and labour, but tried looking for a used engine and they are about £1k so not too sure why this option would be cheaper :-/

They wont know what is broken untill they open up the engine, they might find more parts to replace once they get inside.

I don't know where you are looking for engines but there is a lot for sale on Ebay for reasonable money, try and get one that is complete so you are not paying extra labour for swapping parts over, fit new cam belt change oil and all filters and you should be OK for a few years, stripping the engine down can open up allsorts problems you might end up spending a lot of money on it,if the guy does not do the work properly ,like just changing the piston rings and not re boring the cylinders,or just fitting new crank shells and not regrinding the crank you could be back to square one in a few weeks..
