WeX
I'm not sure if this is the absolute last instance, but it's fairly recent. All I was asking for is one example, can you provide one?

mossdog
Yep, there are very few institutions as hypocritical as religious institutions, they bleat about starving people whilst their top hierarchy live in luxury.Bit like Unions really!
hyper
Much as we dislike children working in slave like conditions, you can bet our pension or ISA funds are invested in firms in the far east churning out knickers at minimal cost. Does that mean we are guilty of condoning child labour? if we are innocent here, then so is the Archbishop.
mossdog
It's a very small indirect investment and the Archbishop has said on national radio that he's embarrassed by it and is committed to stopping it. Furthermore he's pledging to use the not inconsiderable financial resources of the C of E to help undercut the loans companies that are making abscene profits from the poor. I think that's to be applauded rather than condemned. Never had you down for a man of the cloth Halibut(or leanings that way)....... and I also applaud him. And is it surprising that Welby (new in post) didn't know the details of every single investment held by the Church? Nope, it could be being used to bank roll a south american dictator for all I know, and that's my point.
Vague_Boy
The church have decided not only to lend people money I guess these loans will be interest free? “You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest. Deuteronomy 23:19 “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. Exodus 22:25 If so, sign me up. It's a very small indirect investment Church accused of unethical investment in aluminium mine Church of England accused of unethical investments Church of England 'checking if it invested in porn' Protest against church funding arms trade I guess that's what's known as a "diverse portfolio". Perhaps the Jews in the old testament needed a heavy hand when it came to matters of making money out of people...................I'm more of a new testament person myself.........very hard to find fault with JC.....although it caused him a sticky end at 33. Jeffrey Shaw
It's a very small indirect investment That's the nub of the issue. The CoE did not 'invest in Wonga' at all. It invested in a company that, unknown to the CoE, invested in Wonga.
