Mecky
But wait — right-wing means supporting family values and a big society, doesn’t it? No, that sounds like communism.
Mister M
Prof Matthew Flinders recently got himself quoted in the Star as saying that the destruction of quangos wasn't working , and that this would be a blow to Ukip who campaign against quangos . This article is therefore on public record . Please have a look at Professor Flinders' pretentious article entitled " Beastly Eastleigh and the "none of the above party" ". ( sorry Mods , work full-time and haven't yet worked out how to do links ). Is it just me , or do any of you think that a "highly respected" ie Labour-supporting politics professor is unable to work out why working class people are turning away from the 3 main political parties ? When the average person on the street can tell you exactly why ? Jeeeeez Why just the working classes turning away from the three main political parties? In your original post you didn't mention that possibly the most influental lecturers in British politics, is Philip Norton, now Lord Norton is a Conservative Peer....That doesn't support your thesis. This thread is rather like the usual bellyache about how notables of the stage and theatre is stuffed full of 'labour supporting luvvies'. Of course, were it stuffed full of Tories they would be known as grandees or VIPs
truman
Should there be more left-wing economics teachers I wonder? Like G Brown Esq.?
mossdog
It's always been the same.............The right lean towards generating tax revenues while the left lean towards consuming them. Socialism comes at a cost and eventually runs out of other peoples money as the well known saying goes, so don't lets kill all the right wingers off too quickly! WeX
Like G Brown Esq.? Could you imagine your first day on your Economics Degree course sitting in your lecture theatre full of excitement and anticipation and in walks Gordon Brown. ---------- Post added 01-08-2013 at 11:00 ---------- It's always been the same.............The right lean towards generating tax revenues while the left lean towards consuming them. Socialism comes at a cost and eventually runs out of other peoples money as the well known saying goes, so don't lets kill all the right wingers off too quickly! Never a truer phrase: Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. - Winston Churchill
janie48
I prefer to have a left-wing and right-wing balance in politics, with enough in the centre keeping an eye on those with the power-seeking motives.

Unfortunatley Janie there isn't a left wing in British politics anymore: the centre of gravity has moved rightwards over the last 30 years. And those with power seeking motives are usually in the middle, to appeal to the 'floaters' (in the political sense)

Happ Hazzard
There isn't a left wing because people aren't interested in voting for it. There are still parties like SWP and the Communists. They get very few votes. Labour moved to the centre because they wanted to get elected again.
Hillpig
No, that sounds like communism. Communism never supported family values. All affection and loyalty was directed to the state. ---------- Post added 01-08-2013 at 14:28 ---------- No not really. But it's heavily influenced by economic fear above all other factors. The battle to purge political ideology from politics was won by Blair, a.k.a "The Master". The Tories political ideology, has not changed that much, Blair recognized the futility of socialism and won three elections based on a perceived "3rd way". This proved equally futile. The future is blue.
