alchresearch
A. As your load would be overhanging the original dimensions of your vehicle, altering it's turning circle making it unsafe. I know people who carry kayaks on the top of cars and they exceed the car's length and overhang.
damageandy
why do people post responses when they have no idea what they are taking about???????????????? everyone who has said its illegal are wrong, simple as that, stop giving crap advise about a subject you clearly know nothing about. Aslong as the load is clearly secured and marked it is perfectly fine from the horses mouth. https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q748.htm

Owethemnowt
It is not illegal Beware the 'van man' brigade after conning you. A secured load. Doors open or not. So secure it. Flag it. Red cloth dangling. Drive within speed limits, always signal and give way. That's it. I move all sorts with the back doors not shut and with objects projecting. But you use your common sense. The Police would only inspect it to determine if you are safe or not. They do not jump in with 'that's illegal' as some suggest on here.
