Electerrific
Yes about 20yrs back, lovely place to visit if you're around that area- scenic. Also try Bamburgh castle, Berwick, Hexham and Alnwick!

Anna B
If I remember rightly the Lindisfarne Gospels are on display here, and they really are beautiful. Well worth a look. Lovely place.
Obelix
You can also go see Cragside which is not that far away - as well as the excellent Bamburgh castle which someone else mentioned. Just be aware the tide comes in very fast....!
ANGELFIRE1
Aye, we have been a few times all around the area. It's a smashing place to visit, but if you are going to the island, as others have said - check the tides. Angel.
shanes teeth
Last time I went was as the last stage of walking St Cuthberts Way.Starting at Melrose the last section was across the sands at low tide, following wooden posts and refuge towers to mark the way. On another occaision we stayed overnight at a B&B many years ago.We went out to a pub for a meal at the usual time, only to find the pub almost empty. We ate,had a few drinks and slowly, towards normal closing time, the place started to fill up.All the locals had started to come in after the tide had come in.If the bobbies aren't on the island when the tide comes in,they can't get there 'til low tide, next morning!Having started at the usual time,by 12.30 we'd had enough and as we left the party was just getting started! We had breakfast at the B&B next morning and went out for a walk. The place was like a ghost town!
Obelix
I've often wondered how commuters to jobs off the island manage - it must be quite odd workign around the tide times. There can be only so many times you can do a couple hours shopping waiting for the tide to go out!
shanes teeth
From what I can gather the trick is to treat it as like living on a "proper"island and be self sufficient on the island. There are shops, pubs,a garage,a school etc. on the island. They just see as getting to the mainland easily as a bonus over living on a proper island. Peer Gynt
Went camping there around 1954/5 with St Marys 147 Sheffield Scout Troop. We travelled all the way from Sheffield in a Caudles Removal wagon.
