oldprune
my view is that its all about distracting twits like you from the corruption problems in Spain. The fact that the crooks in charge in Madrid should try something that is so transparently a red herring is not surprising when theres people like you knocking about the planet:hihi: imagine if you were in power, after the free-for-all over Gibraltar you could get Germany and Denmark to fight over Schleswig-Holstein. And the US and Canada can squabble over their borders, or The UK can renew its claim to North America. And then we can fight with France about Quebec. And Scotland can invade Berwick, which was so disgracefully annexed by England. And Portugal and Spain can argue over their borders. And Germany can demand the return of its Eastern Territories. And Poland can demand the return of its Eastern Territories. And Austria can demand the return of its Empire. And Finland can demand the return of Karelia. would'nt it be an exciteing world then:D But wouldn't Morocco have a claim on Spain anyhow. The Moors ruled Spain as well as Gibraltar for centuries before they were kicked out.
johncocker
Yes thats why we have refused Spain's request for joint sovereignty in the past, but now its really a dispute about the first treaty, and the Spanish claim that the treaty was not specific enough about the surrounding waters. but don't forget Gibraltar is in the EU, it is EU territory. Therefore any border controls have to be proportionate and reasonable. Excessive and disproportionate controls are illegal under the Treaty of Rome which is why the European Commission has already summoned Spanish officials and will be demanding explanations for recent Spanish antics at the Gibraltar border. ---------- Post added 13-08-2013 at 15:47 ---------- But wouldn't Morocco have a claim on Spain anyhow. No it is not. Gibraltar has a 'special relationship' with the EU.
frank ryan
Gibraltar is as much a different country to Spain as the UK is to France. no it isn't - it's not a country by any measure, it's a car park sized piece of spain that doesn't pay any taxes. ---------- Post added 13-08-2013 at 17:19 ---------- Spain should sort its act out on Basque and Catalan Independence before it seeks to claim any other territory. Hain's joint sovereignty idea was put to a referendum in Gibraltar in 2002. It was rejected by 17,900 votes to 187. who'd vote to pay tax? ---------- Post added 13-08-2013 at 17:21 ---------- Spain should sort its act out on Basque and Catalan Independence before it seeks to claim any other territory. Harleyman
The majority of Gibraltese are not Spanish. They're a mixed bunch of British. Indian and Genoese descent. They've already made it clear they want no part of Spain. Dont blame em either. Who would want to become part of a country where the economy is crap and the national unemployment rate around 25 percent... as high as 50 percent among the young
andygardener
No it is not. Gibraltar has a 'special relationship' with the EU. It has some minor differences from say German EU membership as it is a dependancy but it is still part of the EU and the rules regarding border controlls are germaine. Electorally it's part of South West England.
Jeffrey Shaw
ahh - like the mason dixie line! - now I understand Mason Dixon? ---------- Post added 15-08-2013 at 23:03 ---------- but don't forget Gibraltar is in the EU, it is EU territory. And the UK has one Euro constituency (SW England) that includes Gibraltar. Yes, not a joke. Even the hated EU therefore agrees that Gibraltar is part of the UK's overseas territories.
