Daid
It's people will if they can shake off the lethargy that's consuming most of them.
Maxtor
Unless we stop being ashamed of our history, our heritage and our accomplishments then we wont ever be great again.

tinfoilhat
just interested in peoples different opinions so the question is what will put the 'great' back into great britain? I don't think we can. Too much time has passed, and the world has changed since we were a proper superpower. Whilst we did many great things as country a lot of our greatness came off the back of oppressing people in an awful lot of countries. You could argue some of those countries might be better off under the rod of British colonists but that's a different thread. We don't make anything much anymore, or if we do its for someone else. Can't see us bringing it back either (see Anna b thread on manufacturing). We don't seem to have the same pride in doing a job and we're quite happy to bring a foreigner in to do a job - at any level. Does that 6th rating in education mean much then? Probably not. We aren't great any more, but we aren't Somalia or Syria. And who should we try and emulate? Can't complain really can we?
Daid
Why we were called 'great' in the first place is debatable but it appears that it has little to do with any accomplishments or power we may have wielded.

You could argue the accomplishments bit but 200 odd years ago we wielded a lot of power.
Daid
You could argue the accomplishments bit but 200 odd years ago we wielded a lot of power. I don't doubt that but the tag 'great' did not come about because of it, or at least, there is no evidence to prove it conclusively.

I always though it referred to all the British isles, as in greater britain rather than "we're well great us"
