What is Bradway like?

Recommended Posts

Bradway is in the Dore & Totley Ward, east of the River Sheaf, and like Dore and Totley shares the S17 postcode.

It ranks amongst the best neighbourhoods in Sheffield for most health related issues. Comprehensive NHS statistics about Bradway can be viewed as part of the Sheffield Health Profile 2012 at; http://www.sheffield.nhs.uk/healthdata/nhoods12/99_Bradway_2012.pdf

Houses generally sell quickly. There aren't many currently available so a newcomer may not be drawn to some parts. Children generally do well at school, possibly as much due to parental support as the schools attended. A high proportion of university educated adults live in Bradway, one of the highest in Sheffield.

We moved here 6 years ago and bought 3 years ago. We looked at 3 houses in Bradway and thought it was a nice area but lacks shops, pubs, cafes, etc. We now live happily in Woodseats very close to Graves Park and Millhouses Park plus loads of shops.

jemson may not have looked too closely at Bradway before choosing Woodseats but it's good they're happy with their choice.

Bradway residents have 3 local pubs to choose from, the Castle Inn, the Old Mother Redcap and the Shepley Spitfire towards Totley Rise.

There's a butchers, an excellent greengocers, 3 hairdressers, a travel agency, a card shop, a chemists, a Spar that includes a newsagency and Post Office - the PO open longer hours than almost any in Sheffied from 6am to 9pm, 7 days a week.

There's a Murco filling station and service station, a Coral betting shop, and Sainsbury's will probably be opening a Local shop on the site of the closed Bradway Hotel within the next year or so.

All the large supermarkets deliver, and Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons all have large stores about 5-10 minutes drive away. For a change supermarket shoppers may try Sainsburys in Dronfield or Tesco's Superstore and Sainsbury's in Chesterfield.

There are two cafe/coffee shops and a chinese restuarant and takeaway.

Dore & Totley and Abbeydale golf courses are found in Bradway, plus the Bradway Driving Range. There's a bowling club.

There are pre-school facilities and a children's play area on the old school field.

Border View Farm sells fresh meat and produce, and horse riding lessons are also available there.

Dore & Totley station is within walking distance for those wishing to commute to Manchester (quite a few Bradway residents do), or go walking in the Peak District. Millhouses Park is not far away with Graves Park an easy journey by bus or car.

Bus services into the city are adequate, and Meadowhall is a long trip by public transport! By car Meadowhall is possibly quicker to reach than the city centre at most times of the day!

Many residents will go to Chesterfield for shopping as a change from the larger city.

The Peak District is very close by car, bike, or just walking. There are plenty of nice pubs with restaurants in that direction.

Houses in Bradway don't come on the market too frequently because residents tend to stay a long time. When they do become available they're often quickly snapped up by existing residents seeking a bigger house or better position. Only flats tend to stick for long.

Sorry 1978 but we did look closely at Bradway. We have friends there and in Totley and we lived on Totley Rise for 18 months. It is a nice residential area but not what we wanted. Personally, I think it is better for the older citizens of Sheffield.

depends whereabouts in Bradway, IIRC the Emdund Close flats have an S17 postcode

Indeed. They did no favours to the Bradway pub. I suspect Bradway is a much nicer place to live now that the pub no longer attracts chavs from the nearby estate.

but the pub is closed and boarded up!!!!!!?!

The pub closed because I think it could never decide what it wanted to be. One minute it was a decent pub with reasonable food, then there'd be nasty, cheap blackboards outside advertising 'cheap' Stella and Carling. Two different markets, and never the twain shall meet.

From the bits I know, Bradway looks pretty nice.

True. We went and had a great meal there once and it was well regarded in Star. Next time we went in, they were being held to ransom by the brewery and had hardly any drinks and the food was poor. Then those managers left to be replaced by nasty blackboards and lager. That part of Bradway struggles from being so close to LowEdges. One of the houses we looked at was near the flats.
