Swimming lessons need deep end

Hi

My son has swimming lessons however the pool doesn't have a deep end and he's swimming for a few metres and then putting his feet on the bottom a lot. Can anyone recommend a swimming venue that might be better for him as I feel he's not progressing anymore at the current place. He's 7 and can swim for a small distance but usually gives up after a while and walks on the bottom. Thanks

Hillsborough Leisure Centre's pool has a moving floor - so is often shallow I believe. Upperthorpe has a deep end, and does good quality swimming lessons. Mine have all learnt there and are all good swimmers. It is now called Zest, you'd have to google for the telephone no. as I can't remember it.

Chapeltown baths has a deep end and the shallow end isn't easy for small children to put their feet down while swimming, although they can stand up in it. My son learnt there and is a very good swimmer now - he's passed all ten levels and is a member of the swimming club at ten years old.

I'd recommend Swimstars and Dolphins which is run every evening at Mylnhurst Prep school on Button Hill S11. It's absolutely brilliant. I've taken my son to King Edward's for the last 2 years and we really didn't get on with the stand-on-the-side-and-shout method of teaching there. I wish I'd found this other place earlier. At Swimstars they get in the pool with the children and they actually TEACH them. My son was on an absolute high after his first lesson last night.

They have a website swimstarsanddolphins.com

Our children's swimming teacher, Lorraine, is starting new small group lessons at the Momentum Gym, near Shalesmoor/the university.

Her class sizes are going to be small ie. maximum 6 and she is great at developing children's basic water confidence as well as improving their strokes at a much higher level. Our children have come on more in a few months than they did in a long time at other swim classes.

She's an amazing teacher and I would recommend her 100%, hence why I'm posting this!

For more info, tel Lorraine on 0744 359 9876

Hi I teach swimming for both the education dept and privately run lessons and you are certainly not alone in your frustration! However, deep water is not always necessary to stop a child constantly standing..Whenever I teach in shallow water I use games and fun challenges (age appropriate) to encourage swimming longer distances. I also run a swim school where the depth is a constant 1.6m specialising in ages 4+. All classes have a max of 6 children which I find aids progression faster. Have a look at my site at splashandswim and feel free to contact me for more information..Good Luck!
