chalga
Where would that be? It also isn't as simple as just looking at the wages. You also need to factor in the generous benefits here that top up the income of low earner( which means low paid immigrants make a net-negative contribution to our nations coffers). They obviously have... which is why they choose to come here. Well what difference does it make if it is immigrants or UK workers that fill the low paid jobs, both will be making a net negative contribution as they would presumably be earning the same wages and getting the same benefits,so the UK taxpayer is subsidising UK businesses because they don't want to pay a living wage. The only way that the UK might benefit is by getting the unemployed to fill the jobs so that they are not getting that benefit although they will still get the top ups,so there might be a net gain in contributions if unemployment benefit is higher than the top ups. Somebody else gives this example: QUOTE I used to work for a Hotel. Hard work and very low pay. I could just survive as the Government paid my rent. The work, chamber maiding was back breaking and thankless. The Hotel used to send a bus out to France and Portugal to recruit workers. These were live in, so they had no need for benefits. I will never understand the contempt that managers and owners have for their staff, or even for the guests. The rooms had not been redecorated or new curtains put in for 6 decades, the girls work uniforms were ripped under their armpits. Even the smallest of rooms cost about the same for a night as we earned a week. Chamber maids chefs and waiters are what makes a hotel, they really should be treated with due regard. Only British people with fatally low self esteem, as I had then, would ever contemplate such work. It's time that we had living wages, companies should not be subsidised by governments by paying low waged staff benefits. Time to stop blaming the low paid and time to blame the low payers. It's worth noting that when the Conservative conference was in town they doubled the prices and we had to keep the brochures hidden, all the Hotels in Bournemouth did that. The clever and less mean spirited Swedes stipulated before letting in Eastern Europeans that the new immigrants could not be paid lower than anyone was else getting, that stopped this from being a problem. Just because someone gets benefits as well as a wage doesn't mean they necessarily make a net negative contribution. Even if they do it means more money is circulating in the economy preventing stagnation. Not everything is measured in financial terms anyway. Their work will provide a service that may not be financially measurable. If it is they are adding to GDP. In fact they're adding to GDP either way. angos
God forbid a population might go down. It must go up and up and up forever! It appears that plenty of people have been brainwashed into thinking that the population and GDP must always grow otherwise we are in deep crap. Happ Hazzard
These workers coming over are one of several reasons why Labour haven't a hope of winning the next election. The Tories might not play it up, but UKIP certainly will and it will reflect VERY badly on Labour.

cressida
I'm just wondering where they are going to live due to the housing shortage and long waiting list for council houses, is accommodation marked out for them or will some of them end up in people's spare rooms?
