Wedding venue help & advice please!

Recommended Posts

For anyone else searching who needs a venue that is licensed for civil ceremonies you can get lists from the relevant authorities.

I used a map (http://www.sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/sheffield-city-region-map.png) to figure out which authorities were relevant near sheffield.

The lists for each are at...

Sheffield: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-married.html#approved

Barnsley: https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/business/licences-and-street-trading/approved-premises-for-marriage-and-civil-partnership

Rotherham: http://www.rotherham.gov.uk/info/200067/marriages/1020/arrange_a_marriage_or_civil_partnership/7

Derbyshire: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/community/births_marriages_deaths/marriage/licensed_venues/default.asp

Cheers. I guess I can rule them out then.

We've been to look at the Manorial Barn a couple months ago but weren't impressed sadly. There was no outdoor space, there's no option for your own catering, and they don't do Sundays. If they're that inflexible before they have my money I hate to think what a pain they might be once I've coughed up!

Try Castleton Rotary Centre, not sure if you can have your ceremony there though. Hartington and Hargate are also good. Have you looked into Whirlow farm?

The rotary centre isn't on the Derbyshire list of licensed places but it looks good as a venue for the reception if we end up having a 2-site wedding.

Hargate Hall isn't big enough without a Marquee which would take us way over budget.

Hartington Hall was suggested by claiireee a few posts above - I'm waiting to hear back from them via e-mail :)

Whirlow Farm has various options, but the only 1 big enough that doesn't require a marquee (which is too expensive) is the Lambing Barn. This is a possibility but isn't available until June and we're hoping to have an early May wedding. If we decide to move the date I'll definitely follow it up.

Cheers for all the suggestions :)

Hi,

My partner and I are trying to find a venue for a wedding in Spring 2015. We've looked at quite a few places but not found anywhere quite right. We're looking for somewhere as near as possible to the following, if anyone has any recommendations we'd be really grateful!

+ We want to provide our own wine. We don't mind paying a small corkage

+ We're looking in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire - within 30 minutes or so of Sheffield

+ We want to have both the ceremony and the reception at the same venue

+ We'd like some gardens outside for photos, although they don't have to be huge

+ We'd like the venue to have a little bit of character or age

+ We're on a sensible budget, so no more than £1500 for the venue hire

+ We're looking at a minimum of 90 guests for the meal (a buffet to be organised by us)

We really liked the Old Rectory in Handsworth, but they weren't even willing to discuss the possibility of us providing our own wine which ruled them out. We also liked Wood Lane Countryside Centre but the venue isn't big enough for 90 guests (and they've massively hiked prices). Bradfield Village Hall was also quite good but it was a bit too plain looking (and corkage was a bit steep). We're going to look at Hargate Hall soon but I don't think it looks big enough (without the marquee which would take us way over budget).

Finally, does anyone know much about either Cannon Hall Museum or Tankersley Park Golf Club?

Hello Jon.

Being wedding cake suppliers we have delivered to just about every venue in South Yorkshire and the vicinity. For or start I'd try Renishaw Hall, or if you have already looked there try Whirlowbrook hall, a truly super venue in brilliant gardens.

Hi,

Looking at an earlier post I notice you might be considering a ceremony and reception at different venues. In which case what about Townfield Barn?

There's also Langsett Barn, beside the resevoir. I have no idea what it's like but remember a lady posting on here a while ago and mentioning it.

Then further out, but not much information re:prices is http://www.massonfarm.com/index.html

Thanks for all the replies

We're still looking at options.

Whirlowbrook Hall closed and was then reopened this year, but is apparently a lot more expensive now than it was.

Our current front runner is Woodkirk Valley. We've just got Whirlow Hall farm and Hartington Hall to look at unless we decide to have the ceremony and reception at different places. I'll post an update when we've seen them.

Hi

Have you looked at Wentworth Castle? Lovely place and you can provide the food ect. Henry is the wedding coordinator and it a lovely bloke. My wife owns Ambience South Yorkshire and we dressed a wedding here on Saturday, lovely place and great gardens for the photos. They have a couple of rooms and their conservatory will be finished later this year.

Thanks - yes, I have their brochure. It is a lovely venue, but its £2250 just for venue hire (for ceremony and reception) which is a bit beyond our budget. It's on our "back up" list

An update...

Whirlowbrook Hall - bringing our own wine isn't an option under any circumstances, as with other venues, if they aren't willing to negotiate to get business then I'm not willing to spend money with them.

Niagara Centre - Self catering is only an option in a £3000 marquee. Corkage is £10 per bottle. The marquee is way over budget and the corkage is too steep.

Hartington Hall is a total waste of time, £3900 (unless we finish by 5pm), and no flexibility on catering or booze.

Whirlow Grange looks like a possibility although we don't have a ball-park price yet, and they don't allow outsider caterers. Corkage is a 'fairly' reasonable £6.60 per bottle. We're going to go and have a look around.
