Obelix
It'll probably be different to your view of what it is considering your comments on these boards I know and am eternally grateful that it's different to your idea of "fair" Mecky.... I1L2T3
Pay all workers the "Living Wage". Do away with all subsidies and tax breaks. Reduce by one third JSA. Just bring living costs down. Here's the reality - millions of people cannot afford to live in this country without being helped by the government. We all know that if employers had to pay a wage based on living costs here that they couldn't survive. ---------- Post added 04-09-2013 at 18:59 ---------- But the not working people have had years of not contributing anything. What percentage of council tax do non working people pay? 35%? That's a pretty good deal isn't it? Barely a third of that paid by people that go out to work every day. No, it began under Labour when millions of people were working in state subsidised industries doing jobs that did not need doing. The Tories just removed any pretence from it all, you might as well pay people to sit at home to pay them to go to work and do nothing of any value. Actually, the Tories were onboard for decades of post-war big state policies, eventually including acceptance of nationalisation. It was the death of the postwar socialist consensus and rise of neo-liberalism that caused things to change.
Gleadly
The problem is that everyone has different ideas re living costs. Reading on another topic that some kids have £10 a day for lunch and also have Blackberries. How many 2-car families are there? How many go out 2 or more evenings a week? How many have more than the free Sky TV package? More than 1 room with TV? Keeping up with the Jones's?

blake
people are losing focus, on what the Tories have to do to govern next time. They did not manage to secure a majority in the last election. And there is no reason why they can realistically expect, to get one, next time. Gleadly
I'm talking about basic living costs. People can't afford the basics without state support. Can you define basics? Clearly people need enough to feed themselves, sensibly, and that excludes fast food. They need enough to pay their essential bills, such as water, gas, electric, council tax, rent. One has to give up drinking and smoking. Entertainment? Give up any paid-for Sky channels. I'm not sure what assistance a home owner (on mortgage or otherwise) gets. I'm sure I've missed a few other items, hopefully not many.

I dare say some people say they can't even though they can. ---------- Post added 05-09-2013 at 07:47 ---------- Can you define basics?
