honeyb35
I need to have a sewing machine PAT tested and just wondered what's an average price to pay please?
navyblue
Do you have to have it done? http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/faq-portable-appliance-testing.htm
Obelix
Check it has the correct fuse in it, check the cord is not damaged, check that the casing is not damaged. It's hardly a high risk enviroment. Put a notice on it saying dont operate whilst spraying water on it and you are probably good to go. Not everything has to be PAT tested, not everything needs an electrician. http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/faq-portable-appliance-testing.htm Edit: Hah - Navyblue beat me to it I see! honeyb35
Sadly yes. I'm taking a class and only allowed to use my machine if its been properly tested
Obelix
You can properly test it yourself. A visual inspection of the machine for damage would be more than sufficient. If they want a sparky to do it then they can pay for it.
honeyb35
Gotta be done properly and stickered up sadly or no lessons :/
Obelix
Inspecting it yourself *is* properly PAT testing it though! If you really want to print off a sticker and bung it on there with a squiggle...
dogsneck
Some really useful advice there as always on the forum. If you can bring it to Hillsborough i will do it for a bottle of wine. Not really cost effective, either way, to charge for time so we could call it a gift to each other.
Ghozer
The regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (ie they don't make inspection or testing of electrical appliances a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually)... Also, there is no legal requirement to label equipment that has been inspected or tested... However, this doesn't mean that individual companies and organisations won't request you provide some sort of certificate of safety (which the sticker basically is, unless it's less than 2 years old (usually))
