The parkrun thread

It was cold, but at least it was dry! However the overnight frost did lead to a number of cancellations across the Yorkshire & Humber region.

There were 47/59 parkruns in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Cancellations were at Centre Vale, Cleethorpes, Cliffe Castle, Dewsbury, Graves, Halifax, Huddersfield, Humber Bridge, Oakwell Hall, Potternewton, Rother Valley and Wakefield Thornes.

Of 45 events completed both last week and this, 36 had higher attendances and nine were lower.
Total attendance was 9547, an increase of 169 (1.8%) from the previous week.

Sewerby & Temple Needham both had attendances of 155 and Frickley Country & Northallerton had 76.

Niche stats:
Total region attendance has been under 10000 for four out of the last six weeks. The last time this happened was March 2018.
The average attendance for the previous 10 weeks (11013) is the lowest since February.

The average weekly attendance over the last 12 months has increased by 25.0% (9677 to 12099). The mean attendance per parkrun per week over the history of parkrun for the region is 209.9; the median is 170.

The first week in December is, allegedly, the lowest parkrun attendance of the year but Sheff and Roth buck the trend and record an attendance in the 2,000's. Concord lead the way with their 5th highest attendance. Millhouses showed signs of settling down with an increased attendance, on the previous week, for the first time. Graves seems to be the major contributor to them.

If Christmas Day wasn’t already in the hearts and minds of parkrunners, then it certainly was after the 2019 edition!Any comparison with the Saturday edition is irrelevant purely because of the number of planned events. Having said that, of 27 venues which held events in the Yorkshire & Humber region, 24 had attendances higher than the previous Saturday and only three were lower.

To show how Christmas Day parkrun has grown in the region over the years, listed below are the number of runners and events over the last five years:

2015: 3000 (13 venues)
2016: 2937 (13)
2017: 4657 (18)
2018: 6430 (24)
2019: 8509 (27)

Four venues recorded all-time attendance records: York (803), Roundhay (558), Concord (414) and Sheffield Castle (221).

York: first time attendance of 800+. Only three other venues in the region (Sheffield Hallam, Huddersfield & Hull) have had higher. Tenth highest attendance ever for the region (out of 14335 events).
Roundhay: second time 500+.
Concord: first time 400+. (Only five, out of 466 events at this venue, have had 200+.)
Sheffield Castle: first time 200+. Now only five venues in the region (out of 59) have never had attendances of 200+; Millhouses has never been lower than 241.

The regular Saturday summary will be produced at the weekend. 🎄

Andrew Burgess-Tuplin. on facebook/Yorkshire parkruns

So squeezed in between the bonus parkrun days of Christmas and New Year, was a regular Saturday.

For the first time, all 59 parkruns in the Yorkshire and Humber region went ahead with New Earswick staging just its fourth event in the last two months.

Of 58 events completed both last week and this (comparisons are with 21st Dec, not 25th), 46 had higher attendances, 11 were lower and one (Potternewton (95)) was the same.
Total attendance was 13611, an increase of 2185 (19.1%) from the previous week.

Nostell & Wakefield Thornes both had attendances of 238, Doncaster & Graves had 210, Bramley & Dewsbury had 121 and Centre Vale & Potternewton had 95.

The average weekly attendance over the last 12 months has increased by 24.3% (9891 to 12292). The mean attendance per parkrun per week over the history of parkrun for the region is 209.9; the median is 170.

The total number of events staged across the region in 2019 is exactly four times the number in 2012; also the number of venues has almost doubled since 2014. Below are annual totals for those years:
- venues; events; total runners; average attendance per event per week

2012: 14; 679; 104006; 153.2
2014: 30; 1399; 254849; 182.2
2019: 59; 2716; 664800; 244.8

The average attendance in 2019 is a new record, marginally eclipsing that of 2017 (244.6).

Rather than eliciting further comment, I will allow the reader to generate their own conclusions from these figures.

Happy New Year to all readers of these posts and best wishes for 2020. 🍾

Sheffield & Rotherham parkrun New Years Day attendances for 2020.

446 - Graves, New Attendance Record, +48

750 - Hillsborough, New Attendance Record, + 171

229 - Castle, New Attendance Record, +8

Total = 1,425

Sheffield parkrunners  were joined by the hoards of invaders  from outside the county to smash Attendance records everywhere. New Years Day Doublers (NYDD) had the chance to clock 2 runs in the same day  as Graves and Castle runners, 9am start, dashed across the city to attend at Hillsborough, 10am start, and achieve one of the  parkrun challenges.

Those of us who did the double (NYDD) outside the county helped Poolsbrook, 10.30am start, to another Attendance Record 625 (+8).

All 163 National records including our are here -

How many doublers? and where did they go?

Graves > Hillsborough = 39

Graves > Poolsbrook = 141

Graves > Hudderfield = 1!

Sheffield Castle > Hillsborough = 93

Sheffield Castle > Poolsbrook = 43

Sheffield Castle > Barnsley = 1
