New 1,500m Indoor World Record.

The Olympic 1,500m gold medallist, Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, had a magical return to track on Thursday, setting an indoor 1,500m world record at Le Meeting d’Athlétisme Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Liévin, France. Ingebrigtsen broke Samuel Tefera’s 1,500m record by half a second to win the men’s 1,500m in 3:30.60.

As late as 12hrs before parkrun’s traditional 9am start, the talk was of how many events would be going ahead rather than how many would be cancelled. The fact that the majority did take place across the Yorkshire and the Humber region was nothing short of a miracle given the havoc caused by storms Dudley and Eunice earlier in the week.
44/62 events took place across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Of the regular series, cancellations (predominantly due directly or indirectly to the weather) were at Ancholme Valley Way, Beverley Westwood, Centre Vale, Chevin Forest, Cliffe Castle, Concord, Goole, Graves, Humber Bridge, Middleton Woods, Millhouses, New Earswick, Normanby Hall, Nostell, Rother Valley and Wetherby.
Total attendance was 7950*, a decrease of 3328 (29.5%) compared with last week. The largest attendance was at York (520); the smallest was at Frickley Country (52). Of the 43 events that also took place last week, 20 saw an increase in attendance and 23 were lower.
This week it was Scunthorpe’s turn to stage its 400th event.
Barnsley and Rotherham both had attendances of 133 and Cross Flatts and Sheffield Castle had 108.
Over the history of parkrun in the region, 8327 events have had an attendance of 170 or fewer, with 8329 being 171 or higher. The median attendance is therefore (just) 171.
The rolling weekly regional average of 10486** over the last two years represents a decrease of 18.6% when compared with the previous year (12881).
*Weekly figures with regard to number of runners and the running total for the last two years are pending the attendance from Endcliffe parkrun.

Endcliffe attendance = 487

As one event in the Yorkshire and the Humber region closed, so another began. It was announced that Castle Howard is definitely an ex-parkrun. Runners in North Yorkshire now have another option available with the launch of North Yorkshire Water Park (the longest named parkrun in the region).
This also means that Oakwell Hall remains the only parkrun in the region not to have returned since 2021, nor confirmed closure.
57/62 events took place across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Of the regular series, cancellations (due to continued recovery from the storms the previous week) were at Brighouse, New Earswick, Wetherby and York.
Total attendance was 10653, a increase of 2216 (26.3%) compared with last week. The largest attendance was at Endcliffe (587); the smallest was at Frickley Country (45). Of the 42 events that also took place last week, 27 saw an increase in attendance, 14 were lower and one (Harrogate (288)) was the same.
Normanby Hall and Temple Newsam both had attendances of 166, Halifax and Nostell had 160, Bramley and Centre Vale had 117, Conyngham Hall and Humber Bridge had 103, and Concord and The Cinder Track had 89.
The mean attendance of events over the history of parkrun across the region has reduced to 170 (the peak was 172).
The rolling weekly regional average of 10475* over the last two years represents a decrease of 18.3% when compared with the previous year (12829).

The third wettest February of the last 140 years across the UK continues to have an impact on the number of events staged across Yorkshire and the Humber. For the rest, it was a bright, if chilly start to the meteorological Spring.
56/62 events took place across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Of the regular series, cancellations were at Beverley Westwood, Brighouse, Goole, New Earswick and Wetherby.
Total attendance was 10718, an increase of 65 (0.6%) compared with last week. The largest attendance was at Huddersfield (611); the smallest was at Bowling Park (59). Of the 55 events that also took place last week, 25 saw an increase in attendance and 30 were lower.
Just one matching pair this week: Ancholme Valley Way and Peter Pan both had attendances of 165.
Whilst the annual trend for weekly attendance continues to fall, the mean over the last 10 weeks is 10045 – the first time above 10000 since 27 November 2021 (10058).
The rolling weekly regional average of 10428* over the last two years represents a decrease of 18.5% when compared with the previous year (12789).

Almost perfect weather conditions greeted parkrunners across Yorkshire and the Humber two years since the last parkrun prior to the initial lockdown.
58/62 events took place across the Yorkshire and Humber region. The courses at Brighouse, New Earswick and Wetherby still being unsuitable.
Total attendance was 10655, a decrease of 63 (0.6%) compared with last week. The largest attendance was at Huddersfield (583); the smallest was at Frickley Country (54). Of the 56 events that also took place last week, 25 saw an increase in attendance and 31 were lower.
Oddly, although five venues had attendances in excess of 400, there weren’t any between 300-400.
Hillsborough staged its 400th event.
Hillsborough and Pontefract both had attendances of 281, Barnsley and Graves had 169, Nostell and Penistone had 127, Conyngham Hall and Goole had 117, Centre Vale and Potternewton had 113, and Dalby Forest and Halifax had 107.
The rolling weekly regional average of 10275* over the last two years represents a decrease of 20.3% when compared with the previous year (12888).

*From next week, I will amend this calculation. As it will be more than two years since lockdown, I will switch the timespan over which the average weekly attendance is calculated to be the average over the last year, compared with the preceding two years.
