PatriciaWood
Any details about this would help me searching for details of Arthur Edward Wood are there any old maps of where these were based and does anyone have any memory of this company? pigiron
Don't have any specific info. but recall trucks operating in the Ecclesall area (S11) in the 50's or early 60's as I was always amused by their slogan "Our name is Wood but we sell coal". hillsbro
The entry in the 1925 Kelly's Directory reads "Wood John, coal merchant, Corn Exchange chambers, Exchange street (T.N. Central 444); coal depot, 20 Park Station & Station Yard, Penistone Road North. T.N. Owlerton 76". This suggests that the main office was in the old Corn Exchange building (Corn Exchange Chambers being on the Wharf Street side of the building). The Penistone Road North yard would have been at Wadsley Bridge railway station; the "Park Station" referred to was the old Park Goods Station in the Furnival Road/Canal Wharf area. Here is a link to a picturesheffield.co.uk photo showing coal merchants' offices there, and one to a railway map showing Park Station and its link to the old Great Central line east of Victoria Station. Park Station closed in 1963. Going back to the 1905 directory, the entry reads "Wood John, coal merchant, Harvest Lane coal depot, 20 Rowland Street and Wadsley Bridge railway station".
