It's disgusting. I have less and less respect for "the powers that be" in almost ever sphere. Nothing hypocritical about mooting and considering all options in almost any situation. There is much to be said for a 4 day working week whether for children or adults ,but as mentioned above the important issue is the total hours worked. In my opinion it could not work for those under secondary school age. However the issue has nothing to do with the pandemic measures, unless you are determined to make a connection. The problem that schools have is a difficult one. In most schools, staffing costs make up around about 85-90% of the total budget. That doesn’t leave much scope for savings elsewhere. So, if heating and lighting costs increase by a factor of three, that will probably leave most schools unable to function. The choice will be between teaching and heating. There simply isn’t anywhere else to save money.
El Cid
Schools are there to educate and to babysit children, whilst the parents work. Our society revolves around a five day working week.

There are reports around of some small hospitality businesses deciding to close after seeing not just three fold, but ten fold increases in utility bills. Thus, the fact they were prepared to let kids miss seven months of school was disgusting, in fact it's hard to believe it even happened. Having said all of that, if it saves Chekhov a few quid for his trip to Skeggy that he can spend frivolously on contactless public toilet costs then it would be insignificant - that's the odd week per year, not seven months...... Errr, no. Yet again you just prove you do not have kids. School is 8.45 to 15.15, most people work 9.00 to 17.00 approx. The "crux of the issue" is you cannot go changing people's lives around, for which they have planned how to cope, at the drop of a hat. One of the big problems with the world's over reaction to Covid is many people think anything is now acceptable and people will just have to cope, after all, they did during the pandemic so they can again. My response to that is **** off.
