What does "far right" mean anyway?

Recommended Posts

Ron Paul is far right IMO. Hitler, Stalin, Kim Jong Ill and the others are far left. I know others disagree. The left likes to have the moral high ground so any tryants or despots tend to get branded "far right" to keep the left clean. But any government that wants to have total control over people's lives is living on the left side of the polical spectrum IMO.

Most informative.

"In an extensive survey of the literature, academic Cas Mudde found 26 definitions of right-wing extremism that contained 57 different ideological features.[16]"

Kind of makes my point.

The main one was blaming all the problems of the society on a few groups of people (Socialists, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, foreigners, etc), then persecuting them. Right wing capitalism just targets the poor, fascism targets 'outsider' groups.

There was obviously strong nationalism. Militarism. Social conservatism. Imperialism. They suppressed trade unions & supported corporations.

Since trade unions are associated with big government, and corporations are associated with libertarianism, this is a good point. I don't associate nationalism, militarism or social conservatism with small government though.

Wasn't it Margaret Thatcher who said of her philosophy:

"Economics are the method: the object is to change the soul"?

Spoken like a true Stalinist

The only people I've ever seen arguing that Hitler et al were far left are those from the far right.

In my personal worldview (although I'm sure I'm not the only one) far right = racist, nationalist, prone to banning things and intolerant of gays, the disabled and anyone who isn't like them. Utterly repellent.

To the OP: Do you really believe being an economic libertarian is all there is to being right wing or are you being deliberately stupid to make some sort of point?

And if so, what is it?

i think hes far right and just trying to shift the goalposts slightly to make himself feel better

This is all genuinely my opinion.

Do you have a better definition of "right wing" than mine.

Any stupidity I might appear to show arises from the small size and poor functioning of my brain.

That definition is a little circular. In my experience, the moderate right are usually the first ones to stand up against banning things. If you mean that the right are disinclined to subsidise minorities, you may have a point there but it's not quite the same thing.

Small government isn't the only feature of "right wing" politics, it's part of a specific type of right wing politics called libertarianism (right wing economics, liberal social policy). Clearly Hitler was no Libertarian.
