poppet2
Typical, and just before winter steps in. More deaths no doubt, as pensioners will fear putting on their heating. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/oct/01/eon-fixed-price-tariff-pensioners
Mecky
Why should pensioners have their own tariff?
Cyclone
A tariff based on age is probably illegal under age discrimination law.
whiteowl
The Government is making the energy companies reduce their number of tariffs down to four. You didn't really expect them to remove the expensive ones and leave the cheap ones did you ?
poppet2
It's being axed because: 'In a package of reforms unveiled by the industry regulator Ofgem earlier this year, which aim to make the energy market more transparent and simplify pricing, energy companies have been told that they must offer no more than four tariffs for each type of fuel.' So guess what, they cut the cheapest fuel for pensioners. If it was due to age discrimination, other companies would have done the same and schemes such as the bedroom tax, exempts pensioners, would also be discrimination. It wouldn't be very sensible to cut the profit making tariffs and keep the non profit making tariffs would it.

How's that for care in the community. Oh, despite the millions of profits utility companies make.

geared
The energy company are only allowed 4 tarrifs, so it's expected that all these schemes will shut down. Surely they'll have: 1. Standard tariff 2. Energy 7 tariff (or whatever it's called now) 3. Card meter tariff 4. ? - maybe special promotional tariff they use to get in new customers. They don't really have alot of options open to them, and need several standard tariffs to operate.
