Driving licence query

Recommended Posts

You will need to take the full test for a motorcycle.

This is half the answer. It depends.

The simple answer is that you will need to take a CBT. Costs about £100, lasts half a day. It's v basic and makes sure you can control the scooter and understand road signs etc. Pass this and you can ride a 125cc bike (well 33bhp but we won't get into that) with 'L' plates. No motorways etc. CBT needs to be retaken every 2 years.

To drive without 'L' plates or on motorways you'd need to take the full test.

Can't you ride something up to 50cc with a car licence?

Yes, if you passed your driving test before Feb 2001.

From DVLA:

"If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you are qualified to ride a moped without L plates (and/or D plates in Wales), although it is recommended that you complete CBT before riding on the road."

A moped is a 50cc scooter.
