Andy C
it's that time of year again..... Sheffield & District Campaign for Real Ale present their 39th annual Steel City Beer & Cider festival. The whole event is organised and staffed by volunteers who run the show to share their passion for good beer and cider. Venue - Ponds Forge, International Sports Hall Open: Wednesday 23rd October 5pm-11pm (entry £2.50) Thursday 24th October 12pm-11pm (entry £2 before 6pm, £3 after) Friday 25th October 12pm-11pm (entry £3 before 6pm, £5 after) Saturday 26th October 12pm-11pm (entry £5 before 7pm, £3 after) On top of the admission price there is a deposit to pay on your commemorative glass. This can be refunded if you do not want to keep it. There are discounts on the admission price for CAMRA members on production of a current valid membership card. Live music features: Thursday 8pm - The Outfit Friday 6pm - Johnny and the Moondogs Friday 9pm - Roaming Sun Saturday afternoon - Loxley Silver Prize Band Saturday 9pm - Soulfaces There is also a pub quiz Saturday tea time. Throughout the festival there will be games, tombola, food and stalls. On the bars there will be around 150 different beers. The majority will be showcasing breweries from our local area however there will be others from further afield that are either beers we know and love or something new you probably haven't tried before. Whilst all the beers are from craft brewers and we are here to promote good cask beer and the diverse styles and flavours available, our volunteer staff will be down to earth and help you find a beer you like - we'll be avoiding the geekery of some of the trendier beer festivals! Just come along and enjoy the beer! Over on the cider bar there will be a range of around 25 different artisan ciders from around the UK including the locally produced Woodthorpe Hall cider from Holmesfield. The full spectrum from Dry to sweet ciders and perrys will be covered. Finally, for those who like more continental beer styles such as lagers and fruit beers there will be a small selection of imported bottled beers. SteelCityAle
Here's the beer list, subject to availability, delivery etc. Info is from the brewers so don't shoot the messenger if it's wrong. All beers available from the start (subject to readiness), when they're gone they're gone, so don't come Saturday night expecting the full range! 8 Sails Windmill Bitter 3.8% Abbeydale Absolution 5.3% Abbeydale Black Mass 6.6% Abbeydale Deception 4.1% Abbeydale Doctor Morton's Corpse Nailer 4.1% Abbeydale Smoked Porter 4.8% Acorn IPA? Andy C
to explain the Clark's IPA Special v1 and v2, both IPAs are exactly the same in terms of strength, hops etc but are being brewed with different types of malt. A bit of a change from the fashionable focus on the hops...
SteelCityAle
oh yeah, the 'Pirate Badger Attack' is an Arbor/Brewdog collaboration, and although it was brewed at Arbor, it's as close as you'll get to a cask Brewdog beer these days!
Andy C
Further news - the special Wentworth beer is a Sloe Stout which will prove interesting. The Dronfield BG Sips will not be at the festival as the brewer does not feel the brew is good enough and instead it will be going down the drain! There may be some additional beers on the list from Arbor and Spire. The Sheffield IPA is 4.8% and the Bonfire Mild is actually 5.2%. ---------- Post added 23-10-2013 at 00:42 ---------- The festival opens 5pm Wednesday... details http://www.sheffieldcamra.org.uk/festival
Stoatwobbler
I went last night. Very enjoyable all in all. The 2 beers I enoyed the most were Great Heck "Black Jesus" and Tynebank Rauchbier.

SteelCityAle
Again-as last year-very average.Bland, flat beers.I go to 15-20 fests a year and they are all better...and cheaper. bland? think you must have picked the wrong beers! I found plenty of decent stuff (admittedly a couple of duds too, but overall I'd say the standard was good...)
