Sheffield folk songs

Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone knows any traditional folk songs that would be specific to sheffield (failing that, Yorkshire) that would be sung by locals or workmen back in the 1940s or before.

Not war songs. But any old workman or folk songs?

Any suggestions or links would be a great help. Thanks very much.

Paul.

Down on Dixon Lane there are some dirty women

If you want a crack at them youll have to pay a shilling

Soldiers half a crown, Sailors half a Guinea

Big fat men two pound ten,

Little lads a penny.

That was the first verse to a song that used to be sung in my grandfathers pub in the east end of Sheffield. The men, and women, who sung it were steelworkers and buffers in the main, with a few colliers thrown in.

I heard it as a kid just before the war, I guess it is very old and as Dixon lane is mentioned it must be Sheffield in origin.

The late great Tony Capstick had a hit record with a folk song called A Sheffield Grinder.

I used to go and see Tony when he did a turn at the Grapes pub on Trippet Lane and to say that he was shall we say interesting is an understatement .
