Zamo
A thought provoking piece on the subject here - http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/nov/17/slandering-roma-isnt-courageous-but-racist?CMP=fb_gu What do you think? I think it's something we see a great deal of on SF. This is the problem with widening the meaning of racism to include culture. It effectively means you cannot criticise or reject a culture without it being labelled as racist. It is a tactic that liberal extremists have used to try and silence debate that challenges their beliefs and politics but, like over-perscribing anti-biotics, we have become immune to the accusation. The fact is that Roma communities upset people wherever they go and their bad reputation is well deserved. And, like the boy who cried wolf, they are responsible for the consequence of their reputation. If you are part of an anti-social community then you are guilty by association... that's life. That is why the Roma with brains choose not to associate.

I1L2T3
From the highest rated comment, from somebody with direct experience of trying to help the Roma community: Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Always two sides to every story aren't there. As an aside you have to question whether housing policy has failed in this country if what are effectively ghettos can form so quickly. These people must be in private rented housing? If so who are the landlords? Alternatively if the council has allowed a ghetto to form in social housing then there are serious questions that need to be asked. Lackluster
Of course there is racism. There is in every country and its perpetrated by every colour and creed. Roma's have become the last group to suffer widespread discrimination. But the issues at Page Hall are nothing to do with race. If the new influx had been by white students from New Zealand and they were behaving like the Romas, there would be the same complaints. Its a tricky situation to deal with because on the one hand there is a group of people behaving very badly, no respect for the area, the existing residents or the environment, but they are not white. So this means whatever they do there will be calls for it to be excused by the usual suspects, see the OP. This is nothing to do with the Romas being immigrants, its to do with the way they behave. This is why they are being discriminated against and not wanted.
