Police probe 'racist' mural at primary school

Reading this story made me cringe with embarrassment. There's a mural in a Scottish primary school that's been refurbished with the help of a Heritage Lottery grant. It's from 1936 and is loosely based on Alice in Wonderland. It contains a golliwog as you might expect from 1936, but it's a lovely piece of art and reminiscent of other British painting of the period.

A mother of one of the children reported it to the police who are investigating and said:

"Police in Edinburgh have received a complaint in relation to a mural at a primary school in the Trinity area.

Officers are now liaising with Edinburgh City Council education department with regards to this matter.

Police Scotland treats all reports relating to hate incidents extremely seriously and will thoroughly investigate whenever a report of this nature is made."

I really hope that this mural can remain in place and isn't defaced by order of the police. The idiot who reported it needs her head examined.

Sorry but that is sadly life now, some people just seem incapable of leading one, it's 77 years old FGS.

I suspect (hope) the complaint will go precisely nowhere.

If the school/education authority have any sense then they'll leave the mural as it is and use it as an opportunity to discuss with the older children the historically negative associations with the golliwog and racism generally.

I'm more concerned that a mural depicting scenes from Alice in Wonderland contains a golliwog, as far as I can remember Lewis Carroll never wrote about them!

History is history, it should never be buried.

I re-read Breakfast at Tiffanys a couple of weeks ago. A classic piece of literature. Some passages in the book were quite shocking in today's context. A lot of language from the 1950s that would be classed as racist today. I still managed to read the book without any emotional damage:D

Go and read it yourself, if you haven't already. It is a great book.

The Yellow Diamond wasn't a reference to a sparkling Oriental geezer ;)
