xdbx
I think someone at the council is having a laugh if they think thats a market! I hope for the businesses in there it is fruitful for them but its all been created artificially, and it shows and yes I know its only been open a day but come on did anyone behind the project actually visit the competition in the 4 nearby towns? The council have dropped the ball here and need to admit it. We've lost over the past years 2 of the best markets in the north as well as all the small outside traders in and around that area, the idea that its being hailed as “the best in Britain” is woefully incorrect. SpiderPete
Well all the negative comments on here, is no surprise to me, I had a feeling after it opened yesterday there would be a barrage of negative comments, I feel some of you have no lives and just sit on here being negative all the time..... no shocks there (you wont get a comment back from me if you quote me, I have no time for negativity on here) I went yesterday and its tons better than the crappy Castle Market we had, which was 50 years behind the times, so outdated. New one is nice and clean, I like everything being on one floor, the area at the bottom of the moor yesterday was busy, vibrant and packed...... hope this continues. Moving the market down there I think is a great idea. I shall be going back again.

xdbx
Well I'm not negative just realistic. I'm proud to be from this city, I'm proud to talk about this city but there is a huge lack of understanding by those up top on what we need. The market has been artificially populated to offer a choice so why has that not been the option for the rest of the city? ---------- Post added 26-11-2013 at 13:16 ---------- Whereas the Castle Market grew organically from 3 magic beans. They weren't organic beans They were built and you rented space, so what if there were loads of stalls selling the same stuff, that created competition and more choice. Tess
I work near the old market, and definitely miss it now its gone. Can't wait to have a look in the new market when time allows! I'm quite staggered at £800 a week rent though, does anyone know how much it was for the same size pitch before?

The Moor is now a Sheffield priority so when the investment starts going in with the new cinema and other buildings, that will be very lucrative in the long run, they need to get cracking on pulling Castle down and begin work on the new Moor buildings. natzzz
Popped in to see the new market yesterday, was ok actually, not what I expected but was ok. The eating area is a nightmare though, no more great breakfasts on a plate, instead we are now forced into an oasis type situation with the only options being served on plastic burger take away punnets. Brekkie is only in a breadcake, I prefer a plated breakfast ! :-( Such a shame, we ended up at Rosies by staples instead which was rather gorgeous so that is my new town brekkie home ! Lots of options but sadly the days of sitting down and eating at CM have gone for me, bring back the plates !!!!! We were in there yesterday having a coffee and the coupe on the next table were eating a massive full cooked breakfast and it was on plates. Our cheese sandwiches came on plates. Not sure which retailer you went to.
999tigger
I work near the old market, and definitely miss it now its gone. Can't wait to have a look in the new market when time allows! I'm quite staggered at £800 a week rent though, does anyone know how much it was for the same size pitch before? It was about £1200 a month, but that included a substantial discount due to the dilapidated state. The stall holders get 6 months rent free then 6 months half rent. The rents will then go to the level of what Crystal Peaks is according to the Council. For those disappointed (I was about size), then the new Market is basically the healthy stalls of what was left of Castle, which had been left to decline. The Council are in a difficult position of not accepting or excluding ood rent payers and stalls that were in castle from the new market. A number of those stalls on the main floor i.e not those round the edges I feel will go out of business. The expense of the rent means you will need higher turnover. It will leave opportunity for more specialist stalls to come in such as a deli, baker etc but this will take time. They cant just magic these shops up, am sure they would have let them in if they had applied. They will apply if the market proves profitable. Which would be a virtuous circle. The irony is that gettining in all these new stalls people want will change it from the type of maket we all recall sheaf and caste were, where you got cheap good value produce into something more upmarket like a foodhall. The polish shop that was in castle but closed down would have been ideal.
Kid Sampson
The kitkat multi-storey is right next door. If you get your parking ticket validated (at the customer service desk in the market I think) then the first hour costs just 70p. Great, thanks for that. Can't argue with 70p! natjack
Monzaman you started having a go at me in a very bizarre way and quoting something unrelated. As you dont respond then I can only assume you are drunk. You need to go back and read his post again, he was having a go at CorkerSWFC, and agreeing with you. How I read it anyway. It's called sarcasm, I think On topic, haven't been, will go when it's been running a couple of weeks and have a look around. Hopefully, the builders have allowed for adding a floor or even two for when it becomes the undoubted success it will become. Only went to the Castle Market a couple of times because the area was so offputting. Also hope the plans for that area come to pass, it looks very interesting what they have in mind.
