The New Moor Market

Recommended Posts

I'm off to Norfolk later, I presume if I go down Norfolk St in town that will get me there?

I believe Norfolk Street was named after the Dukes of Norfolk who owned much of Sheffield and donated Norfolk Park to the city. Most Sheffield folk know that.

Back in the days of the PRSY, 'blocking' London is just the sort of petty move that Blunkett et al embraced. It wouldn't surprise me if sticking a finger at the capital was a factor in its placement there.

This is before they all decided that they rather liked champagne socialism and making money in London.

Either way that building is disgusting. Although no doubt the council employees on the forum can 'spin' a positive out of it.

I'm sure they can and are doing.

You do know everyone who lives in Sheffield isnt from Sheffield, right?

Oxford Street then, I suppose that gets me to Oxford?

Most people on a thread about the markets would have an idea that the Duke of Norfolk provided the land for the construction of Sheffield Markets around 150 years ago.

I have no idea where Oxford Street is, but it doesn't alter the fact that London Road was the main turnpike for carriages travelling from Sheffield to London.

Has anyone gone to the new market more now that its on the Moor than in its previous place?

I have only been twice since it was built, yet used to go to Castle Market nearly every week. For what I want it's just to far out to go to.

The Moor doesn't offer me much, unless I want to spend stupid money at Brighthouse or visit the Poundshop (to which Sheffield has plenty).

I definitely go more, but only to pick up the odd thing at lunchtime a couple of times a month.

If it was actually open any night past office hours I'd probably do my main weekly veg, fruit and meat shop there. But it isn't, so I can't.

Which doesn't alter the fact that by the time the Manpower building was built, it wasn't any longer, with virtually all car drivers choosing to use the new route rather than London Road.

I do hope that London Road hasn't been altered anywhere else on it's meandering journey to the capital, otherwise we'll have to direct some ire at other councils for the damage they caused to the Moor.

Yes, lots more. I only went in Castle Market twice, decided it was a dirty horrible smelly hole that was a relic from the past, surrounded by people who looked more likely to want to remove goods from your person than sell you them. It's location was well known amongst students (as I was at the time) as being "the wrong side of the tram tracks", and best avoided.

The Moor Market is like a breath of fresh air, literally.

Yes, I have. I don't think I went to CM once. I work just off the Moor so visit the market at least weekly to buy meat and fish mainly. I'm really pleased it's down my part of town and I do use it.
