cuttsie
went in the new market yesterday, the food area was an improvement but its no way as good as the caste market cuttsie was right the money should have been spent on updating the old market Time will tell and I will bet Nuffields millions that in two or three years we will be getting letters in the Star ruing the day they shifted the Market area. Still neer mind we can amble around the battlements of the freshly uncovered Castle and gaze across the Don at Hancock and Lants.

Still neer mind we can amble around the battlements of the freshly uncovered Castle and gaze across the Don at Hancock and Lants. exactly! the problem has just been moved nearer to the affluent side, give it a year maybe less, the artisan traders will have gone bust by then and been replaced by more and more cheap tat and how long before the council reduce or subsidise the stall rents to stop trader exodus? You can't update that.
999tigger
wilkinsons have a shop less than 800 yards away ---------- Post added 27-11-2013 at 01:21 ---------- whats is dissapointing is the down and outs seem to be following the market What are you basing this on? The market has been open for two days. The moor was buzzing when i went there with people going for a look. Too busy to notice the down and outs. Were you there doing a survey? As for Wilkinsons it is a much smaller branch for the students. People are not going to walk across the main roads just to go there. Theres scope for another twenty stalls. If they are all new and more specialist food retailers, then people might get their wish. It could just become a massive food hall. A decent deli or baker needs 2x as much space as the larget unit imo or equibalent to 4 units. Its a shame they skimped on the second floor/ balcony because the food outlets could have gone up there and had more space, thus releasing much more space for other stalls. Nail salon, photographer, hairdresser were all better placed to be out of the way.

You can refurbish any building that is standing . The concrete on the Castle Market is as good as the day it was cast.
Agent Orange
I noticed a lot of younger people in there the other day, mainly students (especially Chinese). The market seems to be attracting new customers and with it, probably it's longer term survival. It's great that it's branching out to the new as well as the old. I think it will keep going strong, especially as more shops open around it... encouraging people to visit. You are right regarding it's size... it seems smaller than old market. anywebsite
You can refurbish any building that is standing . The concrete on the Castle Market is as good as the day it was cast. Not really. The concrete might still be good, but the design was all wrong from the start, so the concrete is in all the wrong places. It's on too many different levels, too many steps, it kept a lot of the old & disabled out. It was too dark, little natural light got in. Ventilation was poor. It always stunk & attracted flies. It needed more than a bit of refurbishment & what would happen to the market while it was being refurbished? I agree that it's a shame it's not still in the traditional markets area, but Castle Market is only fit for demolition. Maybe they could've demolished Wilko's & put it there instead, but it's too late now, the new one is open. The new market is not so bad, a lot of the same traders are there with newer improved stalls & there are a few new ones too. It's all on ground level, easy for anybody to get around. It's bright, fresh & clean. It's smaller, but most of Castle Market was empty. A lot of the stalls were closed yesterday when I went, but I heard they've all been rented & some are just taking a bit longer to open.
